Hi everyone,

I have been reading this forum alot and I have a few questions. Sorry if they are elementary.

I am retired, 51 years old and in good health. My wife and I want to see Europe and Asia by backpacking. We can't really afford the big, luxury hotels - and I don't believe you really get the "flavor" of the country by doing this. We are in no rush because we are retired.

I've noticed many posts saying it costs $15-20000 dollars for a 6 month to a year trek. Is it really that much? We want to hike (ramble) extensively and stay either in our tent or a low cost accomodation.

Where to we begin to plan? We can choose starting/stopping points and countries in between, but how do I find out about where to stay, how to get there, and hiking trails? There's much info on the web, but alot seems to be just advertisements. How about security and places to avoid?

I'm sure I'll have many more questions, and I hope I don't bore all of you too much. I know you have a wealth of information; please share it with me.

Thanks in advance.
bob

Well depending on what countries you are planning on going to the price sounds a bit high. I am planning a 6 month trip and I figure it would cost about $10,000 to go Beijijng, Kathmandu- trekking, Egypt, Kilimanjaro, and two months in western Europe. When it comes to finding about where to trek it depends on your exact location, places known for trekking will have their own books. Other than that I would recommend Lonely Planet guide books. They have a lot of great information, they are easy to read, and good for the budget traveler. Hope this helps a bit...

Hi, Glad to learn your travel, really exciting to hear this!
I hope I can give you some thing help here.

When I were making travel in Shanghai, I can see many backpacker live in YOUTH HOTEL. This is qute a useful and cheap way in travel. I don't how is the youth hotel in other countries, cos I have never been abroad, but as I have travel so many places in China. Youth hotel is really doing good here, good service and kind people . Most of them can speak a mouthful English and can serve your every need in the local places. Most important thing is clean, this is what I care about most. And cheap, when I am in Shanghai,Captain youth hotel, it costs 70 YUAN/DAY. That is around $9 . Really cheap, right! And some other places in China ,even cost one bed for $4.5/day. There are a lot these kind of hotel around the world. You can find more information in web. ^^

Regarding the guild book, I have seen one from a foreig friend, I can't quite remmeber the name. But I heard THE LONELY PLANET is also quite good, you can go to book store for reference.

China is really a beautiful country. Do drop by ,when have time!^^
Nice trip !

:)Dont know if you are planning on going there, but if you are going to nepal to do the everest base camp trek, you can hire a guide in kathmandu and it shouldnt cost you more than $25 per day including food and accommadation. you do however have to fly to lukla airport which i think costs about 50gbp each way.

I will be there in march. yey

happy travels,
