As some of you might know, one of the major developments behind the scenes this year (and a bit of last too actually!) has been an extensive mapping feature. Well, I am pleased to announce that this is finally live! Not only that, we have a few other cool new features to announce. Here goes...

MAPS
For those of you that can't wait to try this out in practice, head over to your Map Management area located under your Control panel. For those of you who had travel logs in the old system, you will find these have already been converted for you to give you a basic start. For example, on my map page all the black dots are old travel logs that have been converted. The green line is a new trip that I have created and as you can see, it's now possible to group together countries under one long trip, or have lots of smaller point to point trips set up.

Not only can you create trips like this, you can also map your photos! A great way to show others your trip in illustrative format. All of you who have been adding dates to your photos will find them automatically linked to your trips.

Your map can also be inserted in your blog, which looks fantastic and makes for great showing off ;) Blog entries will also automatically be plotted out on your map, based on the date range the blog entry is about.

There's quite some detail in the map and you can zoom in to a pretty nice level for trip related outlines and plotting photography on the map.

I'm sure I've left out quite a few nifty map related bits and pieces, but there's more to write about. We'd like to thank Sander especially here for bearing with a whole legion of unannounced changes requested by Peter and myself :)

PHOTO COMMENTS
Need I say more? You can now comment on other members photos. Comments can be public or hidden (in which case only the photographer and the commenter see the comment). There's a new link in everyone's control panel to an overview page with comments made on your photos and also a page with photos you have commented on. A great new feature which is sure to be popular.

NEW TAGLETS
There's a few new taglets which you can use to customize your front page with, mainly tied in with the two features above.

SITE TOUR
Special thanks to John Oxton for creating a great looking tour of Travellerspoint and its features. Especially useful for all those viewers who are not sure about becoming a member and want a closer look at the many reasons why they should be!

CHAT
Yes, I think it's safe to say this one will make a few members happy. The chat room has been upgraded and hopefully this will also fix the problem with the downtime experienced with the prior version. Oh, and there are some pretty cool new emoticons in the new chat room too!

There's a few other smaller things, like being able to set date ranges and your preferred timezone on blog entries, the fact that we've upgraded server again to a bigger, better and probably shinier machine, but I can't remember them all :)

Anyway, hope you all enjoy and if you notice any bugs or weirdness, please don't hesitate to let us know!

Having lots of fun getting my trips on the map :)

Special thanks to Sander for his many months of work getting these maps ready for the general public.

And thanks to Dmitry for the addition of the photo commenting!

Oh, and unfortunately there is a bug with the blogs at the moment. Seems our switch didn't go quite as smoothly as hoped and now all the subdomains are being redirected back to the main site. We hope to have this fixed very soon of course !!

Someone *coughIsadoracough* has reached the ultimate level of breaking things - doing it while sleeping!

Finally, it's live!
Thanks, guys, for the great new toys!

Sigh... My map looks so empty. :(

The map looks fantastic. But I had a bit of trouble adding places to my trip. When I type in the first two or three letters, and a range of names drops down, they do not always register. E.g. I typed in Mel, then clicked on Melbourne, and the entry showed Mel somewhere near Alice Springs. I also found the little drop-sideways box of the departure date (I think it was that one) running right across the list of names in the drop down window. Since this was a trip in the future, I liked the dotted line, but found the comment at the end saying that I had not logged any photos a bit superfluous. Keep up the good work!

I haven't quite figured out yet how to use it, but it looks really great; definitely much better than ballofdirt.com :)

Hmm, was it actually saying Melbourne and then placing it near Alice Springs or was it showing a different city called Mel somewhere near Alice?

With the comment regarding not having mapped any photos. Do you mean the comment on http://www.travellerspoint.com/my_mapmanagement.cfm ? This relates to all photos, as photos can be mapped separate from trips so also past photos could be placed on the map.

There is still some detailing here that can be improved, so don't be afraid to ask :)

By the way, for those active travel loggers, I should also specifically point out the 'Group Selected Trips' button at the bottom of the list of your trips. In the old system, you could only add one country at a time which caused many of you/us significant headaches. Now this can be rectified by selecting those 'trips' (actually countries due to the old system) that were a part of one bigger trip and hitting the 'group selected trips' button.

This should hopefully save you quite some time in remapping from scratch!
