As some of you might know, one of the major developments behind the scenes this year (and a bit of last too actually!) has been an extensive mapping feature. Well, I am pleased to announce that this is finally live! Not only that, we have a few other cool new features to announce. Here goes...
For those of you that can't wait to try this out in practice, head over to your Map Management area located under your Control panel. For those of you who had travel logs in the old system, you will find these have already been converted for you to give you a basic start. For example, on my map page all the black dots are old travel logs that have been converted. The green line is a new trip that I have created and as you can see, it's now possible to group together countries under one long trip, or have lots of smaller point to point trips set up.
Not only can you create trips like this, you can also map your photos! A great way to show others your trip in illustrative format. All of you who have been adding dates to your photos will find them automatically linked to your trips.
Your map can also be inserted in your blog, which looks fantastic and makes for great showing off Blog entries will also automatically be plotted out on your map, based on the date range the blog entry is about.
There's quite some detail in the map and you can zoom in to a pretty nice level for trip related outlines and plotting photography on the map.
I'm sure I've left out quite a few nifty map related bits and pieces, but there's more to write about. We'd like to thank Sander especially here for bearing with a whole legion of unannounced changes requested by Peter and myself
Need I say more? You can now comment on other members photos. Comments can be public or hidden (in which case only the photographer and the commenter see the comment). There's a new link in everyone's control panel to an overview page with comments made on your photos and also a page with photos you have commented on. A great new feature which is sure to be popular.
There's a few new taglets which you can use to customize your front page with, mainly tied in with the two features above.
Special thanks to John Oxton for creating a great looking tour of Travellerspoint and its features. Especially useful for all those viewers who are not sure about becoming a member and want a closer look at the many reasons why they should be!
Yes, I think it's safe to say this one will make a few members happy. The chat room has been upgraded and hopefully this will also fix the problem with the downtime experienced with the prior version. Oh, and there are some pretty cool new emoticons in the new chat room too!
There's a few other smaller things, like being able to set date ranges and your preferred timezone on blog entries, the fact that we've upgraded server again to a bigger, better and probably shinier machine, but I can't remember them all
Anyway, hope you all enjoy and if you notice any bugs or weirdness, please don't hesitate to let us know!
