I've done the I-10 Florida - California and back road trips before, lots and lots of fun

Some cool things to see were

- Grand Canyons
- Carlsbad Caverns
- Sedona Platau's

Memphis is a lot of fun! Definitely hit Rendezvous for good ribs/BBQ. There's also a fantastic place for fried chicken, Gus's.

If you're going along a southern route, try to take in a Civil War Battlefield. To go from Atlanta to Nashville, you'd have to go through Chattanooga, which is on I-24. There is a great battlefield there, Chickamauga. Chattanooga also has a great aquarium and a neat little (and I mean little) art district up by the art museum called Bluff View. There's a great little coffee shop called Rembrandt's. They have a daily trivia question, and if you answer correctly, you get a free coffee. :D Public transportation in the main part of the downtown area is free, and the people there are really friendly. I think it's one of those hidden gems of a city that not enough people visit. I love going down there, even if it means visiting my in-laws...
