I would say don't try to do too much in a month. You certainly won't be able to see it all in this time, so try and decide where you would most like to go and stick to just a few places. It's hard to advise without knowing what kind of stuff you like to do, but one option would be to spend a few days in Sydney then spend the rest of your month travelling up the East Coast towards Cairns, especially if you want to do some diving or snorkelling. If your budget will stretch to an internal flight or 2 this would obviously enable you to fit some more places in, ie you could start in Melbourne then fly to Sydney. Or you could spend some time in the North around Darwin and visit Lichfield and Kakadu national parks, then head to the centre visiting Uluru and Kings canyon, then work your way down to Adelaide and spend a few days travelling the great ocean road to Melbourne which is a fantastic drive.
PS, forgot to say, try Jetstar and Virgin Blue for cheap internal flights.
definitely go Cairns, From there u have reef (Great Barrier Reef), Rain-forest ( Cape Tribulation), Tablelands. Plenty of things to see and do. Lots of backpacker acomm. 7hours south by bus and you will be in a Airlie Beach from there you have Whitsunday Islands.(u can fly direct to Hamilton Is if u want to spend the $) bex76 is right these are all worth seeing. If you have more time it would be a better. You will be moving to c everything.
