I can recommend Samoa as an alternative - it is a truly beautiful Pacific island.

The capital Apia is busy, hot and chaotic, and so I headed straight for the island of Savaii - which is much more traditional and very beautiful..

I stayed at 'Le Legota' Beach Resort in the village of Fagamalo and can thoroughly recommend it. I spent two weeks there - and enjoyed the laid-back pace, fresh food, attentive service, friendly locals, the local 'siva', and daily swims in the ocean and with the turtles in freshwater! The beach is your backyard - the ocean being approx 4 metres from the 'fales' that you sleep in!!

Le Legota is on the expensive side - but worth every penny, in my mind. The resort employs about 25 locals - which equates to providing gainful employment for almost half the village! I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Enjoy your travels!

I have been to both Bali and New Caledonia (and Fiji) and Bali wins hands down. New Caledonia was extremely expensive and one of the most boring, over-rated places I've ever been to.

As for Bali, it exceeded all my expectations. I've been to many places in the world, and Bali is near the top of my list of favourites. It's fantastic.

Hawaii is awesome and I'd recommend it to anyone. We used it as a beach holiday after 2 months hectic travelling and spent a perfect week lying on the beach, practicing our surfing skills and eating a huge amount of great food. We stayed in Waikiki, Oahu which is super touristy but has a great atmosphere and some really nice shops. If you have more time you could also visit some of the other islands (I've heard good things about 'the big island' in particular).
