Hey everyone,

Im headed to SEA in January and will be getting my open water scuba certification. Id like to get the certification early in my trip so that I can use it during the whole trip (6-9 months).

Does anyone have any reccomendations for where to get it? Im currently looking at Thailand, Malaysia and Borneo as possibilities. Ideally id like to be away from tourist centers and keep the price tag low.

Any help will be much appreciated!

M

Hi,

You'll probably find similar pricing all over SEA for PADI courses. Maybe a little cheaper in Indonesia or Vietnam but not much. I would suggest choosing your school based on recommendations, where possible, and checking out the school well before you book in.

I hear Lanta Divers in Koh Lanta is very good, although I haven't actually dived there myself. Its one of the less visited Thai islands also, not as busy as Koh Tao, Phi Phi or Phuket.

I personally learned in Vietnam in a town called Nha Trang - which is just about the only place you can learn in Vietnam. The school is called Octopus but I don't think it's still there and the instructor we had has long since moved on.

Before you book any dive course, check out the school well. Don't get wowed by pictures of shark, turtles and octopus, when you learn you probably won't see that much anyway. Pay more attention to the standard of the equipment, is it in good condition, how new does it look, is it stored well and in good order?? Also is the instructor an overconfident idiot or someone who wants you to learn well?

Well after that essay all that's left to say is enjoy! Diving is great fun and if you learn it well, it's very safe!

Andy,
Nigel was running Octopus Divers in Nha Trang and he has since moved back to England. However, Octopus was in operation when I was there in March. The big guy with all the tattoos now runs Octupus, forgot his name.

The Perhentian Islands in Malaysia offer quite cheap diving courses as well as Koh Tao, the whole island seems to cater for learner divers, although not sure the water in the Andaman Islands have clearer visibility.
