Hi Mekill,
Mexico is a fascinating country -- and when you arrive you cannot escape the fact that it is indeed a third world country. Worst is all the trash, but the people are gracious, friendly & anxious to be helpful.
First thing is to apply for a passport. Know that non-residents cannot be employed, so if you plan to stay 6 months in Cabo bring lots of money because tourist-oriented cities are the most expensive. Cabo is geared to the wealthy who enjoy golf and/or deep-sea fishing. If those diversions aren't your thing, then consider an established city on the mainland -- such as Puerto Vallarta or Mazatlan (or Cancun if the east coast is closer to your home) - or Guadalajara. There are a wide variety of activities & places to stay around the cities in those areas. Some aren't too expensive.
The "natives" travel by bus because they go everywhere & are least expensive mode of transportation. Trains are unreliable except to special places like Copper Canyon.
Suggest you go on the web & read about the various cities/areas of Mexico & fly to the area that interests you the most first, then travel from there.
Another words, educate yourself first before heading out! Do let me know if I can be of any further help.

You won't be working in Mexico and won't even be admitted to the USA without a passport.

Cabo San Licas is like Southern California in Mexico-same people/prices and you won't last an afternoon.

Time for Plan B
