mobile phones in S.A?

Travel Forums Central/South America & The Caribbean mobile phones in S.A?

Hello,

Was wondering whether it will be worth taking a mobile phone with me when I go travelling in S.A next year? Maybe using a 'pay as you go' sim card?
Or are mobiles not worth it?
Any advice will be very appreciated

Thanks,

Emily :)

Hi Emily,

I had trouble using my phone in SA, so check compatibility with networks before departure, a variety of GSM standards is used across SA.

But I never missed my phone. There are locutorios on every street corner, and in remote areas you're unlikely to have network coverage anyway. Plus, international mobile calls are still WAY too expensive...

Network coverage, reception and incompatibility (even when roaming contracts should exist) are common problems. Plus, there is a locutorio on every street corner, so in my opinion you needn't take a cell phone.
