I am going to South America i January with my boyfriend. We are planning to stay until May, and start our trip in Brazil. We were wondering if anyone have any suggestions to where we should stay during the carneval? Our plane land in Rio at January the 17th, and we are planning to go north not long after this, towards Amazonas. Does anyone know about a town that is fun to stay in during the carneval north for Rio? How long time does it take to travel from Rio to Amazonas by bus? Anyone who have any tips?
It would be great if you could stay in Rio. Anyway, carnival in Salvador (Bahia) is also amazing. Every city has its own, unique way to celebrate, so you'll like it anywhere you land.
About the time in bus, I don't know exactly, but is a long long way and you should stop in many places in between. Stick to the coast, you'll find beaches of unbelievable beauty.
Roughly, stop at Salvador, Maceio, Recife, Natal, Fortaleza, Belem and venture into the forest.
If you intend to stay in Rio during de Carnival Búzios or Cabo Frio are beautiful cities in north of Rio....but you should make reservations soon. About a trip by bus from Rio to Amazonas ( Manaus ) forget about it it's impossible to go there by bus. You can go to Belém and then take a boat to Manaus (3 or 4 days) and 2 days to Belém ( from Rio) . In my opinion is better to take a plane (Rio-Manaus 5h). Believe it.
I have been looking at accommodation for the carneval in Rio and it's pretty crazy! All hostels only offer 6 or 7 night packages at atleast double the price (usually about from 900R for entire stay). Anyone got any other ideas about accommodation that are a bit more reasonable?
I am staying in a hostel in Salvador for carnival called Nega Maluca. Only cost 450 reais for the carnival week package. So maybe carnival in Salvador is a better option than Rio...guess it depends what you want though really.
Hi. Rio de Janeiro is great during the Carnaval. If you can, go to the Carnaval Parade at Apoteose with some school. There are lots of street canrnaval wich are fun too. You can ask me about them closer to carnaval if there is where you are staying.
Yes, you probably will find it difficult to find acommodation. You can try hostals in Ipanema, Copacabana and Santa Tereza. I have a few adresses to give you.

It also can be nice to spend Carnaval in Olinda (nearby Recife). I've never been there but everybody says it's amazing, and very different from the rest.
Salvador is really crowded. I would never go there in the Carnaval. But some people love it.
I hope I've helped.
Have a nice trip.
