Just wondered if people could give me a little advice please...
I'm due to fly into Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, landing at 10.30pm. I understand there's a train that runs the 70km into the city, but that this stops at midnight. Would I be best to book a room at one of the airport hotels or will it be safe to get on one of the trains (time-wise).
Also, regarding accomodation in the city - I think heading for Chinatown is generally a good bet, but if I was to do so late on that first night would it be worth booking ahead, or is KL fairly good for finding a room easily?
Help is much appreciated... thanks very much.
Looking at your previous posts, I am guessing that you're in southeast Asia now, which also means that you'd probably fly into KL International Airport (KLIA) via AirAsia. Being a budget airline, AirAsia uses the Low-Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) rather than the Main Terminal.
That means catching the KLIA Express train is going to be a hassle as you'd have to wait for the airport liner bus (20mins frequency) to go to the main terminal (about 20km away) because that's where the train stops. Though the KLIA Express train is fast (28 mins) and cheap (MYR35 one way), the time taken to wait for the bus and the journey to the Main Terminal could possibly take another 20-30 minutes. So you might as well jump on the SkyBus service that takes you directly from LCCT to the KL Central station in about 1hr 15mins for MYR9.00 only. Check the SkyBus Schedule.
However, if you're coming into KLIA via other airlines, then you will be in the Main Terminal. Taking the KLIA express train will be the better choice. You will have enough time to catch the KLIA Express train. The train platform is at the lowest level of the building. Just follow the purple colour KLIA Express logo when you get into the arrival hall. The last 4 trains of the day will depart at 11:00pm, 11:20pm, 11:40pm and 12:00am respectively. Once you arrive at the KL Central station, buy a taxi coupon at the counter before the exit door to go to your hostel. There could be a midnight surcharge though.
As for accommodation, it would be safer to book in advance as you'll be arriving so late into the city. Unless the place is highly recommended by other travellers, I'd suggest that you book for one night only in case you want to change to another hostel the next day.
Hope that helps.
Thank you very very much. I am indeed in Asia - Hanoi to be exact and will be flying in through Air Asia. Will book my accomodation and look at the skybus now. Thank you.
