Olaf,
I think in dollars, you convert. Thailand, VietNam & Cambodia can be quite cheap if you choose. Fan rooms are available in most locations for under $10/nite. But air con rooms are also not too expensive, let's pick $15/nite average. That is $450/month for accomodation. I eat all meals under $5/day when I am there, but I am a veggie and don't drink alcohol. You should be able to eat and drink for $10/day average. Add $300. You are at $750 for basics. Add transport, tours, & entertainment, you should be able to have a nice time in all three countries for under $1,000/month. I spend roughly $600/month, but I have been there before and am a 'cheap charlie'.

Good Luck with your trip.

I'd say about $10 per night on acommodation, plus $8 a day on food & water, and another $15 for taxis/souvenirs/drinks. $30-$40 a day is easy to have fun on, and you can easily get by on $20 per day when you're not drinking or buying souvenirs.

I am not quarreling with you, but I found VN to the be cheapest of the 3 countries. I never spent over $10/nite, usually $6 for a room and food was cheap as well. In many places it would be difficult to get by in Thailand for $15/day.

That is good to know Vegasmike.
I am considering Vietnam, as a destination, so i am glad it can be cheaper than the book says.

Mel,
Send me a PM when you are ready to go to VN. I can offer some help with hotels, itinerary, etc.

I also found Vietnam to be the cheapest too (out of Thailand, Cambodia, Laos & Malaysia) There aren't as many hostel/guesthouse type accomadation, but for $10 you can get a very good quality hotel. Plus tours, food, transport (particualy buses) & even beer is quite cheap. And the best thing is in Vietnam is that you can usually haggle for anything, the Vietnamese love it.
