Will be in Bangkok from the 17th of March after spending 6 weeks in Oz. Was thinking of staying for a week or so there. Any ideas on good places to stay.

On Soi Rambuttri there are numerous budget places to stay - I stayed at both My House and Bella Bella and they were fine. It's a good location - it's a backpacker area but is a few mins away from Khao San Road so it's a bit quieter. If you want something a bit more upmarket, Viengtai hotel is also in this area.

What about the Khao San Road?
There are plenty of guesthouses, cafes restaurants and bars, to choose from there. Most travellers spend some time there, so u will meet lots of people.
After u have travelled to other places, in Thailand, then walk along the Khao San Road and surrounding strees. U will almost certainly meet one or more people u met, in other parts of thailand, everytime.

Bex has a good point here- Soi Rambuttri is right next to Khao San Road but a bit more laid back. Its a really good alternative, much nicer and there's a great restaurant I always go to but I can't remember the name! I too stayed at Bella Bella, a couple of times, very nice and clean but I didn't think it had much character. In that area of BKK, the best place I stayed was Kawin Place, just behind the big Irish bar in the middle of Khao san road, as it is spotlessly clean, has hot showers and lovely rooms, and great staff.

Bangkok is ace!

Sukhumvit Soi 8 at Royal Asia Hotel is where is where I usually stay. It's right off of that main road, near internet cafe, lots of restaurants, shops, etc etc

And it is really cheap, only about $30USD per night. Only thing I dont like about it is the fact that there is not internet in the hotel rooms

Good luck, have fun!

I just got back from Bangkok, was my first trip to Thailand, and it will not be my last thats for sure. I absolutely loved the place and I very nearly tried to cancel my flight home :)

Anyway, I stayed at the Premier Inn, Sukhumvit Rd, Soi 17. Very cheap for a single room, only 900 baht a night. In an awesome location, air-con in rooms (needed), clean, tidy and comfortable but definitely not flash:) but good for the price.

Give bbk a chance, my first 24 hours there I hated it, the heat, the nagging taxi drivers, thhe polluted air, insane driving etc. But it grew on me throughout my 8 days there and now I can not wait to get back, next time I will be there for 4-6 weeks at least.

vhpacer, I'm going there in this coming Jan, and I might try out a new place, or new area (rather than my normal Soi 8), so I have 1 question about Premier Inn, how is internet access? And if no internet then is there nearby internet cafes? with laptop hookups?

Please let me know, I would like to try this place out ;)

Yes there is internet in the lobby. 10 baht for 10 mins I believe. Not flash but does the job. It is worth a try, as I said its in an excellent location, I would definitely stay there again.
