This thread is marked as being about Chile

Im currently planning a trip to SA for next year, and was wondering if anyone knows anything about visiting Easter Island. Is there any feasable way of getting there? considering its over 1500 miles off shore.

Just thought i would see if anyone has been there, and if there is an affordable way to get there?

Hi there,

Yeah Marlis is right. I am also planning to go in the nearby future. Only with a other option.

I will buy i round te world ticket and will do a stopover in Easter Island (Santiago de Chile - Easter Island - Tahiti/Papeete. I think much more cheap.

Good travels

Santiago-Easter Island-Papetee-New Zealand

Accommodations at Easter Island are around $ 20.00/25.00 including breakfast.
Easter Island is very interesting around Carneval with all the traditional competitions going on.
Book early, most time the flight is overbooked, but if you volantier to wait for the next flight LAN gives you a voucher for a free ticket, valid 1 year.I took my flight Santiago-Punta Arenas for free.;)

Also, you could try to hitch a fare on the weekly mailer boat which leaves from Valparaiso. I don't have details, but I remember having met a guy who did it for cheaps. Takes some time, though.

Thanks for all the information...unfortunately at ~1000 dollars I dont think I will be able to make it there on this trip. However, there will be future trips so I plan on eventually gettin there.

Perhaps best to tack Easter Island onto a round-the-world trip as then it will be anything from $0-$300 as opposed to s***loads of $$$ as an individual trip - unfortunately not many airlines offer it as a stopover from NZ to Chile, we are going this march and have to fly NZ-STG-EI-STG, which seems silly to me. Does anyone have info on campsites on Easter Island? We have our own tent...Also have been told by travel agents we have to be part of a tour to go anywhere on EI but can't find any info on this in guidebooks - true or not?

I havent seen a campground on Easter Island.
You dont need to go with a guided tour, you can explore the Island by your self.
You may rent a Jeep for a half day or full day to explore the Island.I rented one,$40.00
best is to rent for the afternoon, bring the car back, pick the car up next morning.

Thanks marlis - as far as I can tell there should be a campsite at Anakena (inside the national park) run by Conaf, but if anyone has any info on what permits, if any, are needed, would be greatly appreciated

Hi meeg,
I was 2 times at Anakena, there is like a kiosk under some trees,
at the weekend are some people there, but it looked to me not really like a camping ground.
To go there you need a taxi,it is far away(for me)from the village.
I think I have a picture in my foto gallery Chile/Easter Island from Anakena.
