We have 10 days to kill in oz in Jan 07 either in cairns or brisbane.

Anyone have any thoughts or comments which city is better or traveling between the 2 citys, to help us make our mind up.

Cairns is very much a big town while Brissy is a city. It's very 'cool' whereas Cairns is more chilled and dedicated to backpackers.

You might be able to fly between the two. try webjet.com. The snorkelling to the outer barrier reef off Cairns is really good and you can also do trips up to Cape Tribulation. I think there is more to do around Cairns but depends what you're after.

Hope this helps!

I agree with kslov. I personally would go up to Cape Tribulation or even farther north if you like. Depends what you want to do. The Capatian Cook highway up to Cape Trib is a fantastic drive. Once you are up there you can go further north to Cooktown or hang around Cape Trib and enjoy the tropics - the rainforest and the reef. The further north you go up the coast of Queensland the closer the reef is to the mainland.

Then of course you have miles up miles on perfect beach (mostly without anyone else there). You really can find isolation here. If you want more human life then Brisbane would be your option.

One other point to consider is the Whitsundays. I took my time driving from Cape Trib to Airlie Beach and then spent a week on a yatch snorkelling, sunbathing and generally relaxing.

Great part of the world.

Enjoy.

Bear in mind in January it will be V Hot and Humid - Cairns significantly more so than Birsbane. You won't be able to swim in the ocean outside of the stingers nets up north (you can out on the reef). You can swim if you go to the Gold or Sunshine Coast from Brisbane. There is always the potential for cyclones in the north at this time of year. If there are cyclones in the North, Brisbane could be wet as well but Cairns may flood as Brisbane will just be wet.

What ever you choose they are both nice and have lots to see and do.

Being from Brisbane myself, I would totally recommend Cairns over Brisbane for an international visitor. Brisbane is nice, but in the past we have had some guests stay at our place from the States.. and we've found there isn't a whole lot to show them. We ended up taking them to the Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast (about an hour drive) which have a lot more tourist appeal. Cairns has both the night life and the pretty beaches.
