I am in traveling alone in Thailand now, but I am heading to Singapore to meet friends. My goal is to leave Thailand on the 17th and arrive in Singapore by the 27th of December. This only gives me 10 days (including christmas) in Malaysia.
Can anyone recommend a 10 day itinerary for me? I love being active and I love snorkeling.
If anyone could assist me I would greatly appreciate it. Also if anyone wants to meet for a drink or join me along the way please let me know.
P.S. - I heard Pulau Perhentian is great, but i also know it is low season there. I was told in low season the area is pretty much a ghost town... can anyone confirm?
It's a bad time to go to the perhentians from Oct - Feb. All the divers from the island would have moved out of the place by now.
You could possibly go to langkawi island at this time of the year since you are heading south from thailand. I'm not a diver so i'm not sure how's the dive scene in langkawi but i've heard rave reviews about visiting the payar island just off of langkawi. There are no accommodations meaning it would have to be a day trip.
From langkawi, you could possibly move south to Penang before heading to Kuala Lumpur. However, Christmas is not really a big celebration in Malaysia but we should have a few street parties or club parties in KL during Christmas.
Check out the weather when you get there, speak to locals and find out what they say about the Perhentian's. They are so beautiful it would seem a shame to miss them.
I would recommend Langkawi, Penang, Cameron Highlands (even though it does rain pretty much every afternoon this time of year) and Kuala Lumpur.
I would recommend spending a few days in Taman Negara, the national park. You can do treks of varying length and to get into the jungle it's a 3 hour slow boat journey down the river through amazing scenery.
I don't think any boats will go to the Perhentian Islands from Oct-Feb as the sea is far too rough, so even if you could get there, I doubt snorkeling would be any good. Great shame you're there during the monsoon, I was there in March this year & the snorkeling was excellent.
KL is ok for a few days, china town is fun for shopping, food & just generally wondering around. DOn't miss the Petronas Towers if you're in KL, I saw them, but didn't get the opportunity to go on the sky bridge.
It would be a crying shame to not go to the perhentians as they are beautiful and the snorkelling is great. But i would have to say my secong favourite place was the cameron highlands - its nice to get out of the heat and humidity for a while and some of the views and walks are stunning.
have a great trip
