My sister is currently working in Canada and is thinking about flying down to Hawaii for a week on the 17th January. Does anybody know what it is like that time of year and if it can be done on a tight budget and what would be recommended? Also where is good to stay? Has anybody stayed at the Waikiki beachside hostel? I think that's enough questions!
I went there last October and I flew out of Toronto to Kona. (The Big Island)
I did mine on a budget and I loved it.
My flight wasn't too bad considering where I was flying to. It cost me roughly $1 000 (CDN). It was a low economy flight as well, I had to have like two lay overs.
Once I arrived I stayed in a hotel for 2 nights and each night cost me around $110 (US). This was pretty reasonable in the mornings when they had a nice buffet for breakfast. It wasn't a crappy breakfast either. I ate like pineapple + french toast and hasbrowns .
After that I had a timeshare lined up and that was alrite. It cost me roughly $600 (US) for a weeks stay. I wasn't too please for what I needed.
I completed a course in Freediving there which is why I went in the first place then after that I flew home.
So all in all I went over there from Toronto to Kona for 1 week and 2 days for under $2 000 CDN.
The thing that would have killed me was the car rental. They wanted a fair amount for the car but when they knew I was under 25 the price for insurance went flying. They were going to chalk up an additional $25 dollars a day ontop of the normal insurance fee. So all in all a car would have cost me almost the same amount of money to travel there and live.
I didn't go with a rental car at all. I have better things to use of that money so I just walked around and I managed to get by. Also they have bike rentals and neat little things like that.
I hope this helps
I stayed there. Great fun. I've no idea about this time of yr but it was pretty affordable. I flew from San Francisco. The hostel is really central and clean!
