I just registered here so I hope I've put this post in the correct forum.

I'm a 23 year old male living in England and I'm very much in one of those "get me out of here NOW" moods. In fact, if I could I'd be out of the door this instant. I'm planning on going to Austalia for at least 6 months but I need some help. I don't know where to start looking for info so I've joined here.

As things stand;
I don't have a passport but I'm applying for one
I don't have a visa (more later)
Bit short of cash ;) (more later)
No idea of what needs to be done before I leave
Want to go to Sydney

On the visa. They do three don't they? One for three months, one for a year working and one full time? Because of my lack of funds I need to get a job out there to be able to pay for my food and board. So because of my planned time there and job I'll need to second one? I also have no idea of the sort of costs of getting out there and back. What sort of ticket to buy etc.

As you can tell, I'm very new to this topic. :)

How do I go about arranging work and accommodation? Do I try and do it before I leave or is that not possible/worth it?

How does insurance work? I'd need medical and one for possessions? I plan on taking a large backpack with a few clothes, a camera and... that's it. So maybe I only need the first type of insurance?

What stuff needs to be sorted out here before I go? I'm thinking of car insurance which will need renewing during the time I'm away, etc. I live with my parents right now so don't have to worry about any bills.

I'll cut this short or I'll go on and on. In short, can anyone give me advice or point me to a website with lots of info? And I'll ask more questions and pick brains from there on? :)

Alrite mate,
You seem to be in the exact same position I was in 5 months ago..

I'm heading to Oz for a year in feb via Thailand and Bali... To spend a year (hopefully) out there..

First thing i did was get my ticket, so there was no going back and I had a date set out... I got my ticket from STA travel, flying with Quantas... A year return with 3 stops incorporated cost me £943... for this type of ticket I found this to be a reasonable price from what I've seen elsewhere...

If your planning on working you will need to apply for a working holiday visa... you can apply online at http://www.immi.gov.au
It will cost you about £80.. STA will try an charge you £105 for it, when alls they actually do is send you the forms to complete, so your best doin it direct...

Travel Insurance is essential, you need a good level of cover also I am in the process of sorting mine at the minute, you will need to shop around, at the moment the best quote ive had is £240, but still lookin....

As for booking accomadation it is possible online, but your prob best lookin round when you get there, maybe book a couple of days first so you know you've got somewhere to head when ya get off the plane... I'm lucky as I am stayin with freinds for a while when i first get to oz...

Ohter than that save, save, save... I'm sellin me car and anythin I own to finance the trip, aswell as getting into more debt, but its part of life innit!

You wanna try an sort your finaces out at home, Ive cancelled all my monthly out goings, car insurance/ phone/ anything... alls i will have to pay is my loan repayment when i'm away, but I'm leaving enuff in my account to cover that while i'm away...

As for planning my trip an what to do when i get there, I am just in the process of sorting that out, and I have been lookin on this site for the past few days and found it to be VERY informative... any questions I can think of someone on here will have the answer!

I recon for you first point of call is go into STA travel, there are branches all over the UK and they seem to know there stuff, search the web for a branch near you, they specialise in sorting trips for people like us who aint got a clue!

Do it mate...

Does it make any difference that I'm not a student? :D

I've been told that I may need £4k in the bank in order to get a visa. But when I read about 12 month working visa I saw no mention of it. Or maybe it was something about making sure you have enough to prove you can return back to where you came from?

I don't think I'm going to have any contacts when I get out there. Just me on me todd.

When you fill in your visa application it stated you need to have enuff funds in your bank to finance the first part of your trip in think its $5000aus, which is a little over £2k... (although i know people who have been an they dont necessarily check, but I would say u need more than that...) You also need to prove you have a return plane ticket, which you will have....

i should hopefully have about £4000-£4500 when I enter Oz..

It doesnt matter that ur not a student... go to that STA mate, they specialise in young people under 26 goin on this sort of trip, you dont need to be a student....:)

Nothing to loose goin in an speakin to them, it is a good first step to make, they'll give you all the info you need!

(I sound like a STA rep here dont I, haha!, I just found them very helpful!)
