Train reservations; sleeping on trains

Travel Forums Europe Train reservations; sleeping on trains

herrz has indicated that this thread is about Italy

I am planning on making reservations for the night trains we will be taking before we leave for our trip. (Peace of mind.) Anyone know the cheapest way to make them in the U.S.? I know I can make them online at Raileurope.com, but is it cheaper to do it through a travel agent?

Also, is there a way to find out if the couchettes on a specific train will be 6-sleepers or 4-sleepers? There will be four of us traveling together, so I wouldn't mind sleeping in the couchette if it's just the four of us. (It seems it would be a lot cheaper than the sleeper.) Also - anyone who has slept in both a couchette and a sleeper, I'd like to know the difference other than the sink. Do you have a lot more room in a sleeper? Is it really that much nicer than the couchette?

Thanks!
herrz.

Hey Herzz, welcome to Travellerspoint!

I think price wise it will cost you just as much to book them online as through a travel agent. To be quite honest, there is a chance that a travel agent will actually use an internet site to book the same ticket you could have booked there.

Considering your post I just thought I would let you know that we are working on setting up something like this. In a blatant show of self promotion check out
http://www.railkey.com/tickets/default.asp?AFF=TPT
(you have to copy/paste the url as we don't want these forums to become overloaded with webmasters promoting their links)

There are some other useful train trips there as well by the way...
Hope none of the other moderators here delete this...

Cheers,

Sam

Well, Sam,

Having thoroughly checked your link, it's been decided to leave it for now. So you're in the clear at this particular moment

cheers

Thanks Sole, I think we shall keep you as a moderator then :)

Seriously though, we have just set up what is known as an affiliate program with some company that sells train tickets of all sizes and shapes in Europe. It seems to me that the tickets are as sharply priced as anywhere else in Europe so I was willing to go for this one. I think it will be a useful service for some of our members, especially those thinking of travelling in Europe; apparently a hot destination at the moment!

Happy Travels all!

Sam
ps. if you encounter any problems with this train travel system or find anything better out there, please let me know. As you might have realized, we are in it to create the best deal for travellers out there.... otherwise I think I would start an online casino or something
