I'm planning to go to Peru (going via Ecuador) next February for one or two months. I know that there are some vaccines needed but I was wondering if it were not a bit late because some of them need to be done like eight weeks before my departure. If anyone knows anything about this, it would greatly help me.
If I can't have the vaccines in time and still go to Peru, is it really dangerous or is it rare to catch a disease and the vaccines are only a form of prevention ?
I just got back from Peru only a few months ago. I got a Hep A, typhoid, and a Tetanus Booster. I got them about a month or so before my trip and seemed to be ok. The typhoid was the oral kind and for that to be truly effective the final dose should be taken I beleive at least a week before. It seems that you have plenty of time but check with you doctor though.
Ah, I'm reassured. The point is I could have asked my doctor but I'm in Canada right now and I'm in a remote area so there is no doctor.... But if a month is ok, I should have a little time. Thank you very much.
if you go to the Amazon aerea in Peru you should have the yellow fever vac.
You can get it even at the Airport in Lima, there is a health center.
Look at the web site Go2Peru.com there you find all information for Peru.
Did you get your vaccine in the airport ?
I'm not sure if I would trust doing it there. But I'm not going to the Amazon area anyway. Do you know if they give other vaccines at the aiport ?
As far as I know, vaccination for Yellow Fever ceased to be an official entry requirement for Peru; Ecuador I'm not sure about. Check everything here; the information spread by CDC has the reputation of being reliable.
Only if you would like to go to the Amazon it is recommended to have the yellow fever Va.
Ecuador the same.
No I did not get my shot at the aerport,I will do it befor I go to Peru again.
The last 2 times I was in Peru nobody was asking by my entry in Lima for the little Vac.book.
So it is up to you what vac.you will do.
Hepatitis is for all countrys good,Tetanus also.
Ive just returned from a three week trip to Peru and all that was required for me was the Tetanus and Typhoid jabs which was very quick and painless. I always believed the deadline was 6 weeks prior to departure but i was told you have up to 4 weeks before to have the necessary done. Also as some people have said, the yellow fever is only required if you are travelling to Northern Peru especially the Amazon area.
Don't forget Malaria if you're going into the jungle.
I'm travelling to Peru then on to the Amazon Basin towards Brasil in mid February. So far I've had typhoid and hepatitis A (free), Yellow fever (£40) and I've also just had the first in a course of 3 injections for hepatitis B (£75) all were from my GP surgery. I've included the cost in brackets just incase anyone is interested! I thought I would add that I had quite bad side effects from the Yellow fever vaccine (fever and flu like symptoms) has anyone else experienced this?
I also have a question regarding the Rabies vaccination as I wasn't going to have it until someone said they thought I should. I know how nasty rabies is and the thought of catching it is very worrying. Any advice on this?
Also what is the best course of action for malaria? I've heard if you buy the tablets on arrival they are alot cheaper!
