Hi there

My partner and I are going to Italy for 14 days. We have heard some horror stories about driving a hire car on the narrow mountain roads. Can anyone give advice?

Italians are crazy drivers - respectful, but nonetheless a little insane. Some mountain roads are barely a lane wide, yet they're two-way roads with plenty of crazy passing. If you're a confident, patient driver and can keep up with the pace, go for it. If not, I'd suggest taking the train or a bus.

Italians drive (particularly on narrow mountain roads) like most European drivers, but faster. Also, there's more attention to defensive driving and anticipating reactions of other drivers than what's actually posted (traffic signs, etc). So your driving will have to be more instinctive, with less attention to the actual "rules".

You know your own driving skills. I, personally, don't have enough guts to try it, but I know many a person who think it's no big deal. Luckily, I've never had any trouble getting around by bus or train (and walking and taxis). Good Luck to you (you'll have a good time whatever you decide.)
