I´m in Huancayo now, at La Casa de la Abuela. I don´t recommend it.

My book (Rough Guide) says that the Hostel Plaza on Ancash 371 is about $15 a night; some rooms with showers. Ancash runs right off the main plaza. There are also a couple of other hotels around there:

Hotel Kiya on Ave Giraldez 107 (also close to the plaza) and Hostal Santa Felicita on Giraldez 145 may cost a little more, but still should be within your price range.

Really, you should be able to just turn up and look at places. The bus stations seem in the middle of nowhere when you arrive, but they are walking distance to the plaza.

Also, don´t use Incas del Perú for travel advice. Their tours are overpriced, and in any case, their jungle tour actually requires you to take 5 hours of buses to La Merced.

Can you tell me how you´re getting to/from Iquitos? From Huancayo, I want to do a lap of the South of the country, then fly from Cusco (preferably) or Lima to Iquitos, and then somehow get from Iquitos to Tumbs/Máncora.

thank you mick,

good to know there are enough hotels or Hostales around,so I will find some place and I dont mind to pay a few $more if I get a room with my privat facilitys.
If I will make a guided tour?I'm not sure about this,I dont like it to be rushed from one place to the next if I can avoid it.I like to take my time,or find places interesting to me but the tourguide wont show you this places and brings you instead to shops
where he gets provision. But again thanks for your information about the travellagent.
To Iquitos I fly from Lima with LAN Peru because of my LAN Pass,so I got some miles. There is another Company, about $20 cheaper then LAN,but I prefer LAN

Did you hear something about how carnaval is in Huancayo?I will be there around the 15.Feb.Just booked my flight to Lima:)
How do you go along with the hight and cold clima there?

have a good time ,
Marlis

Apparently Carnaval isn´t that big here, though it is in Lima. Here there is just a parade with some dancers.

As for climate and altitude...

The altitude is okay for most people. I had a bit of altitude sickness when I got here, and then food poisoning made it worse for three days, but is you bring some painkillers and drink lots of water you will be fine, even if you do get sick.

It has rained 7 of the last 8 days, and I believe the rainy season continues through to March. Also, despite it being summer, it is fairly cold here - long pants, jumper and occasionally a jacket. Not so cold that your breath creates mist, but enough to make you appreciate a hot shower.
