options for our future- how do you do it?

Travel Forums General Talk options for our future- how do you do it?

I met my husband when I went to NZ (where we lived together for nearly 3yrs). He is from ZA and we have been living in Austria now for 5months.

Everyone here loves security. A typical life looks like this: finish school, study/work, have kids, buy a flat/build a house and stay there for the rest of your life (inbetween go for a 2week holiday to Croatia, Italy or Greece).

We bought a car a few weeks ago, which we are busy paying off. We always dreamed of designing and building our own house, but since we've worked out, that it is a lot of money you'll need (here in AUT), we r just concentrating on saving some money, so that we'll b able to rent our own flat soon (living with Mum and Dad at the moment).

Although we r settling in really well now, I'm still thinking of all the countries we haven't seen yet and I especially wonder, what our future is gonna look like. The plan is (if laws are not gonna change again)to stay here for another 6yrs (man, that's so long), so that my husband will finally get his austrian citizenship.

At this stage I just don't have a clue where I wanna settle down (people always ask me and think that we r gonna stay here FOREVER). I love my homecoutnry, but from the day I went overseas, there's something inside me that tells me, that there's more out there.

How can you afford and do what I'd like to do:

1.) travel for a month (or just one all around the world trip!!) inbetween work and still have the job, when you come back
2.) have a nice house/flat and still afford your travels (winning the lotto doesn't count as advice!;))
3.) have children in the next 5 yrs, but avoid moving overseas with them/travel all around the world with them
4.) How can you explain to people the phenomen of travelling? Will we ever be able to make them understand???

So how do you do it? What are your priorities? Do you have any advice? (Guys might say: girl, stop thinking)

My motto at the moment: go with the flow and see what's gonna happen.

have a Happy New Year everyone

Hi Kathi!

First off, don't let what other people think influence you. There are some strange, strange people out there who don't like to travel.;)It's like a dug beetle specialist trying to interest you in insect dating rituals - no matter how passionate the guy is, you're probbly not going to get it. So trust in your passions and pursue them, despite what other people may say. It's fuitless to try and change their minds (although lord knows we try).

And second - of course you can do all the things you list below, but the how is the tricky part. I was tempted at first to say you can't have your cake and eat it too, but then - why not? It'll take a lot of figuring out and sacrifice and patience and all those other hard things, but why can't you have a child, a house and travel? Maybe it'll be a small house and shorter trips, or 6 years of working so that citizenships are in order, or home schooling if you're out on the road... but it must be possible. Lots of people do it!

Good luck! You've come so far already.
