Hi there...I arived in Maryland a few days ago & am staying with my brother, sister in law & little nephew. My return flight is on 15th Jan & I want to head off on my own & explore Washington & New York before then. My funds are very limited & I hadn't realised how expensive accommodation is in New York. My brother has suggested I perhaps stay on Stratton Island & get the ferry into Manhattan each day to enable me to save on accommodation. I've been looking at hostels in Manhattan & I just wondered whethe anyone might have any advice/tips re: cheap but comfortable accommodation for 4 days...?
You mean Staten Island right?
If you can find a reasonable place near the ferry, that would be convenient since once your off at southern Manhattan the subway will take you anywhere.
The problem I've had is that inexpensive accommodations near the ferry are hard to come by and lodging more distant will require a vehicle. You may be better off looking in Manhattan itself. Possible choices include the Holiday Inn midtown, and the Howard Johnson's midtown.
I would also check the hotels.com. Sometimes you can get a better rate through that website then going to a hostel. It is worth a look at least. If you can find a cheap place on Staten Island it would not be too bad, free ferry at least. You may also want to check areas of queens or brooklyn for possibly cheaper accomodations. There are some great areas like astoria in queens or or Carrol Gardens in brooklyn. Both have easy access by the subway. Hope this helps.
i wouldn't stay on staten island, but that's just coz' i am not very fond of the place. Butt..i am a little biased cos' i live in manhattan. you can probably find cheaper places to stay in the east village or something. you don't haveee to be in midtown. also, you might want to check out brooklyn. parts of brooklyn are really hip and the hotels there are probably much cheaper. sorry, i wasnt much help..!
