For my RTW trip I'm going to SEA and the way my plans are working out I will not have very much time for seeing Laos so I'm considering leaving it out completely. Starting in Luang Prabang would it make sense to only stay in Laos for a week or should I use that week somewhere else and visit Laos some other time? I was thinking of seeing Luang Prabang and then going north to Luang Nam Tha to do some trekking. If anyone has other suggestions for spending a week in Laos I would of course like to hear them.
If you are planning to do some trekking in Luang Nam Tha (the trekking is within the Namtha Biodiversity Conservation Area), you will be pressed for time, given that you have slotted a week in Laos.
Getting to Luang Nam tha from LP will take a whole day, and returning another day. Which means two days gone on travelling. And to do a decent trek, yiou will need at least 3 days minimum. That's five days gone, and what about LP sights?
Try this: head for Muang Ngoi Kao trek into the mountains surrounding the Nam Ou river for an overnight stay in a Khamu village. Muang Ngoi is just four hour bus ride from LP, and wonderful riverine place with varied activities as well. You can book the trekk in Muang Ngoi itself...It's operated by Lao Youth travel.Try the 2-day trek...
I found some more information about your suggestion on the web and it sounds like a good idea so that will probably be what I'll do. Thanks very much for your help!
