Unless you are planning on spending more than 30 consecutive days in Thailand, you don't need a visa. They will give you 30 days for free when you arrive, and as soon as you leave the country and come back, it will start all over again. I know some of the rules have changed recently and apparently you can only do this 2 or 3 times in a row or something (it used to be unlimited), so that's something to check out. But if you are flying into Thailand, then within a month heading to Vietnam, and then returning to Thailand, then you won't need a visa.

Last time I checked you cannot get your Vietnam Visa at the border, it must be arranged beforehand. I'm sure this can be done in the embassy in Australia, however, it can also be quickly and easily arranged in Bangkok if you are heading there first.

Any hostel or hotel you stay at in bangkok will normaly sort it out for you in a day or max two no hassle and it works out cheaper than doing it in australia - and a hell of a lot quicker.

have fun in nam - it is an awesome country :)
