I was in Essouira in December, we rented an apartment for a week. Very inexpensive and comfortable and we had the option of eating meals at home, since there was a kitchen, which also saved money. Also had the advantage of not having to worry about papers like one might in a hotel- my fiance, who is Moroccan, and I not being officially married yet.

Enjoyed the souk there, and the beach. Found Essouira very relaxing, and just what we were looking for. Too cold to swim in December, but there were local kids surfing and having a great timefrom all appearances.

We also rented a car, and drove to Taroudant and Agadir. its about a 6 hour drive one way. We did it in one day, because my flight from Rabat back home was only a few days later and we needed to visit relatives and friends in Merrakech first, but I wish we had had more time in that area too. Tarroudant is like a mini Merrakech and the water and beach near Agadir is beautiful!

Enjoy your time there!

Essaouira is a great town in Morocco. You get enough interesting shops and places to eat in the medina to make it worth some exploration, but it isn't too big or full of hassle.

Some great places to surf around the area are Immsuane, Merleft and Taghrazout. Ask the locals about these places, they will tell you how to get there. Immsuane is the closest and best surf, a very small town. You can rent some very basic rooms right on one of the beaches. You can surf on the Essaouira beach but it isn't as nice as these smaller towns I mentioned to the south. Again, ask the locals, they are friendly. Another nice beach is Sidi Kaoki, maybe to surf but definately to relax and ride camels.

You will enjoy your time, especially in the medina. Go to the harbour and buy some fresh fish to fry up at one of the stalls, explore the medina, visit the Jimi Hendrix castle. Spend time on the beach or drinking coffee in the square. Also ask people in the music shops to hear some gnawa -- they have a huge festival for this African music in June.

Nightlife is small, there is a dingy Moroccan bar and a more modern one called Il Mare in the medina with DJs or live music. Plenty of hash for sale, a popular pastime is drinking and smoking on the beach.

I spent 3 weeks in Essaouira and loved it -- I hope you find the same enchantment I did.
