Hi I am planning on taking my two children aged 17 and 13 island hopping in Greece. Have yet to plan the route but feel quite confident, with rucksacks on our backs that we will be safe and find accommodation without any problem. Intending to travel for month of August. Is there anyone out there who has island hopped with their children and could offer any advice?
August is the most touristic month in Greece and some of the islands run on a 100% occupancy rate so i would advise you to plan in advance the islands you wish to go. Also it is the most pricey month. There is no issue at all travelling with the kids there.. Some ideas:
1) Quieter islands: Amorgos, folegandros, donousa (the island gets around 5tourists a year so you will have beaches by yourself there...),milos, astypalaia
2) More party and commercial islands: Naxos, Paros, Santorini, Corfu, Cephallonia, Myconos, Crete, Rhodes
3) Another itinerary could be to go from Athens by bus to Pelion, really beautiful complex of preserved villages and from there to take a ferry to the sporades islands: Skiathos, skopelos etc.. This set of islands is very green with amazing beaches.
4) Easycruise.com is also doing low budget cruises to the greek islands travelling at night and spending the whole day in different islands if this is your style.
My suggestion is do not aim to do too many islands but pick one or 2 and just enjoy the scenery..
If you are flying to Athens there is a direct link from the airport to the port by underground and then you can hop on a boat. Just make sure you know your pear since the port of Piraeus is huge. There are a lot of highspeed boats who take half the time than converntional boats but at more than double the price....
