Hi folks,
I was just back from Mt. Kinabalu. Never believe that I have made it to the highest mountain in SE Asia! It is a highly recommended place that you can't miss it.

Through my experience, there were some important preparation steps(besides the fitness preparation) before the departure. Firstly, you have to determine the hiking route. Basically there are two alternatives for the summit trail.
1. Mesilau - Laban Rata - Summit or
2. Timpohon - Laban Rata - Summit

My friend advised us to take the Mesilau trek to go up and take the Timpohon trek when come down. With this, we can then enjoy scenery of both of the trails!! Well, I would say that we have made a right choice!! *_*

After deciding on the hike route, you must pre-book the accommodation This is important especially during the peak season (sometime in May, it is the best month to visit the mountain) as there were limited bed seats in Laban Rata resorts.

Hopefully this little piece of information is useful for you.

Enjoy your journey ahead!! ;)

Hi Kim,
Thanks for your sharing on such an amazing hiking trip. Nice photos! You have inspired me to go there!! I have booked the Air Asia tickets to conquer this KK mountain in May (based on your advice May is the best time to go right?)

Hopefully I can take the some shots as nice as yours!!

Conquering KK as well about this May/June. Amazing place from what i see/hear. Anyone knows about how fit/prepared should one be for this climb?

Just to share with you the fitness preparation that I have done before hiking the mountain. I started my weekly jog three months before the departure. The intensive exercise started only one month before the trip. The last stage of the training is very important to make sure that you are fit enough for the climbing condition. The most effective exercise to recommend is staircase climbing(to train up the strength of the knees). That time we went for staircase climbing at a flat of 11 floors. Each time going up and down through for the staircase for 8 complete cycles!!

Hopefully my little piece of advice is useful for you.

Enjoy your preparation ahead!! *_*

I climbed kinabalu in may last year and having been travelling for almost a year, i hadnt done any exercise or training in about 9 months. I was first to the peak and then ran down to the bottom in a little over an hour as i had to catch a bus! It realyl isnt that long as you arent a complete couch potato you should be just fine. The only problem would be altitude sickness, but i only saw a few people succumb to this on the way up out of about a hundred.

Have fun,
