Hello

I have a flight booked for Istanbul, Turkey in March. Looking on the web-site for the british high commision i realised there are a lot of terrorist groups active. The last attack was in August last year, and the web-site made it sound not safe to go...

Has anybody been to Turkey recently and can anybody tell me if its safe?

Thanks!

:)

There have been small bomb attacks in Istanbul, the coast and of course Kurdistan during the last years, but hardly any tourists were hurt.
Still, Istanbul is a very safe city and you won't have any problems over there.

Hey, I was in turkey last week, istanbul and ankara. Man, that was close! Happly I took my anti-tank, anti-landmine gear, anti-chemical warhead gear and I wore my bullet proof jacket all the time, never forget your heavy machine gun before you step out of your hotel room. If you forget anything don't worry, arm dealers are all over the place, you can get anyting you want for a fair price. Good luck mate, you'll need it ;)...

istanbul is a safe city more than many europe cities. just don't forget basic security rules. you will find many plesant things, but not terror. maybe traffic terror.

have a nice trip.

Hi how's it going?

I went to Istanbul in December and had a wonderful time. As mentioned in a previous reply you have to be careful as in any big city. I have a friend who is a native of Istanbul so I suppose I had an ideal guide and things felt alot safer but upon first arrival and finding my way to my hotel it was pretty daunting.

I found the people very friendly and kind and it certainly opened my mind a bit!

Of course in the tourist areas you will get hassled a bit by touts trying to get you into their pubs/restaurants but it's not too bad - just politely refuse and keep walking!

Hope you have a great time and enjoy this beautiful city!

Paul

If you are really scared for anything terrorist related, this is indeed the way to travel;). Its all the media that scares certain people off. As long as you don't go to a warzone like Iraq and certain area's in Afghanistan its safe enough. As a traveller (backpacker) there is always a slight risk on something to happen. But you'd better look out when crossing the street then for a terrorist that wants to blow up a railway station, where in coincidence, you are waiting for your train. Chance is 1 in a few million:)

You shouldn't worry about anything in Istanbul !
I have been there for 3 times now - last time on November 2006 and New Year's Eve (just 2 weeks ago) in Ankara - and i had great time ! Well, yes you can see the police everywhere but this looks ok for me !
Istanbul is like an "energy" field ! You will feel it once walking on the streets of Historical city, at Galata (Beyoglou) area and Ortakoy ! Taste the excellent cuisine, drink Raki and taste the unique sweets at "Saray" (Istiklal Street). Don't miss a lunch break at "Cicek Passaji" (The Flowers passage - Istiklal Street) And drink as much Cay (Turkish Tea) as you want! Visit Beayzit too and the Kapali Carsi (Closed Market).
Amazing place ... let yourself free and you will feel it !

Enjoy your trip !
