We are taking 4 young boys (ages 8 - 12 years old) on a safari this August in South Africa. What kind of binoculars do you recommend we buy for them? We want each to have their own (if you have kids, you understand why -- having one miss an animal sighting because it isn't his turn to share the binocular is not an ideal memory). Clearly, price is an issue with buying this many. Your thoughts?
P.S. Any other gear/clothing recommendations for 4 boys.
I can't speak to brands, but you might want to consider monoculars. I have a pretty cheap one that I take when I travel. It's much smaller than binoculars, and for kids it might be easier because they won't have to adjust separate lenses.
Great idea ... whatever is easiest & cheapest - I've found that the smaller, the better - less chance of 'doinking' each other as they turn around ;-)
I'd also recommend taking an SA bird book - eg Roberts or Newmans and a book of SA wildlife - usually on sale at Kruger camps. A good game to play is offering x amount of money for the various sitings eg 1st one to see an ostrich - R1, first one to see one of the Big Five - R5, first one to see & correctly identify a new bird species R2. Helps keep up the interest levels!
For gear, I'd suggest light cotton T-shirts & shorts for days & track-suits for evenings & warm jackets (nights can be chilly). Also good walking shoes - strops (leather/canvass sandals with heel straps) for days & trainers for nights.
Hope that helps,
