Hello, during my time in Oz my boyfriend and I are planning on visiting the Whitsundays and Fraser Island. Just wanted to know which companies to use and avoid. Where to book it i.e is it better to just turn up at the port? and what's the best deal you got.
Cheers me dears.
I did both trips with koala adventures - http://www.koalaadventures.com. I chose this company because I was staying at one of their hostels and they offered a really good special deal - I think I paid for Whitsundays and got Fraser Island and some hostel nights free.
I found both trips to be really amazing and unmissable - but I guess it also depends on the crowd of people you get stuck in the boat/landrover with.. Also if you go for Koalas then I recommend 'The Card' racing boat for a more exciting sailing experience.
Hope this helps
Yeah i agree with kerry.....koalas was really good....stayed at koalas backpackers in hervey bay and booked my fraser island 4x4 safari with them coz you get free nights at the hostel.....really cool....watch out for the dingos on fraser..!!!!
Yeah your right, i just checked out that link, and koala adventures seems like really good value. Particularly for Fraser Island, The whitsundays trip is almost double the price. Is that typical of other tour operators? From what I've read the Whitsundays trips don't sound like as much fun as the Fraser island tours anyway. Would you be out of your mind to skip it?.....
I recently did a similar trip that I booked through Oz experience but the company was 'Palace Backpackers' basically you got a 2 night, 2 day (you leave at lunchtime one day and arrive back at lunchtime) plus you get a basic (self drive) 2 day, 1 night Fraser Island tour (which you can pay more to upgrade to the guided if you want - we did) and two nights free accommo at a choice of hostels (which we used in airlie beach and hervey bay), we stayed at Koalas in Airlie (which is ok but did hear a few reports is bedbugs) and Palace at Hervey bay which was pretty good - big clean rooms at least.
Think we paid $599 or similar for the lot, when you work out that you accommo, meals and tour are all included it's pretty good. You'd be spending a hundred bucks or so on that stuff over the few days anyway.
It was all pretty well organised and went really smoothly. Beward though - if you chose one of the racing boats there isn't any cover on deck so if it rains you either have to sit on deck and get wet or go below deck and brave the seasickness. We went on the SV Whitehaven which was good because it was a bit bigger and more stable than some of the others so could still get to Whitehaven Island (Whitsundays) in choppy seas.
Fraser island is unmissable and the whitsundays are fab - the snorkling there is much better than the barrier reef!
I did Fraser with Koalas and thought it was pants! A friend of mine went with Dingo's and she had a wicked time! When we talked about it afterwards it seemed like she got better equipment, better vehicle, better preparation - everything!!!
For the Whitsundays it depends on what you're after - proper sailing adventure where you help with the boat? Chilling out on deck and having every whim catered for or booze cruise? I went for the second option and went on a catamaran called Wings with Oz Adventure Sailing. It was spectacular! The crew were fab, the boat was beautiful and the diving was amazing!!!
Lots of different agencies have offers for if you buy a few different trips in one but be careful! Shop around to make sure you're getting the best deal. We went with Wicked Travel and thought we had a bargain until we started chatting to others who had very similar deals for almost $300 less!!! Peterpans is supposed to be quite good but, like I said, the best thing to do is shop aorund. Play them off one another and see what you can get.
Hope that helps! Have a brill time!
Sooo following up on this older thread, which Fraser Island tour would you recommend? I'm looking into either Koloa's, Fraser ROVing, or with the hostel Beaches....
Im like how the hostels organize a small group where you are independent but have fellow travelers. Any recomendations?
