Any suggestions on transport from Rio to BA? Flights seem to be rather expensive. We don't mind the travelling time if there are things to do or see. Anyone done this leg before?

Several possibilities; most obvious would be to break the journey in Iguazu. Iguazu-Rio is about 24 hours, I guess (Iguazu - Sao Paulo was 18).

IF you want to do it quickly then two overnight busses will do it via Iquazzu. i know someone who has just done that.

I have more time so went from Rio to Florionapolis (17hrs 150Reals) and from there to Montevideo(16hrs, 200Reals) which is where i am at now. You can then get a bus or take a boat to BA

Thanks so much for your prompt replies!

So Mark - what bus company did you use? What was it like? Where did you buy/book tickets?
We are not in a rush anymore so are thinking about stopping in Florianopolis. How long did you stay there for? Are you making your way to BA?

Thanks
Mel

Taking the florianopolis route would imply missing out on Iguazu; I'd never do that if I were you, the falls are beautiful beyond description :)
