It might seem a little trivial to many of you, but I have a terrifying rat phobia. I have even gotten to the stage of trying to find a battery powered electronic rat deterrent. No such luck. Anyway, I was quite happy that I only saw two rats when in India (although I swear one was as big as a dog) and one mouse in my hotel room. Is there many rats in South East Asia? it's not going to stop me going, but i'd just like to be mentally prepared!!

Jenn

p.s. Dont even think of suggesting aversion therapy by me visiting that disgusting rat temple in thailand! not for all the cheese in mitchellstown!!!

I've heard about rats too..
I also like to know what you can do against it?!!
I heard it might be help to put a cat into the room where you are going to sleep.
I hope someone can give us good advice!:) I don't like rats:((

I don't think you can ever be completely sure of avoiding rats - I've seen more rats travelling around the UK than I have travelling abroad though - try Kensington Olympia station first thing in the morning - ugh.

The only thing you can do is to not stay in filthy and the extremely cheap hotels. If it looks like shit and the rooms are filthy, big chance that you will see rats and cockroaches and whatelse more. Very easy, just spend a dollar or so more on your room in Asia. Especially India can be disgusting. But if you have a budget of 5 dollar or less you have to deal with it. Better work and save some more.

Yeah - the two places I've seen rats are Paris and London. And the one in London was huuuuge! I was so disgusted all I could do was giggle insanely.

Sorry I can't be more helpful!

i have a rat phobia too, i get proper hysterical when i see one much to the amusement of people who witness it - so i symmphathise with ya!

Anyway i didn't encounter many rats when i was travelling around S.E Asia. I saw the odd one on the streets but these occasions were very rare, having a rat phobia won't be an issue you will have to cope with on a daily basis while you are there.

There was one place in Malaysia where i was staying that had a rat problem, but that was down to me staying in an absolute dive.

I find monkeys to be more of an issue when i travel

Hello Jennygro

Since u have already been to india, I think u have seen the worse of the rat situation, in Asia.
I remember, walking back to my hotel one night, in Mumbai, with a rat waddling along in front of me, for company.

I have not seen as many rats, in any other Asian country, as I have seen in India. In fact, they were a rare sight, in China and Thailand. I have not been to other Asian countries besides those.

Quoting Mel.

True, Mumbai is indeed rat infested. In fact you should not go to the rattemple in Bikaner if you are scared of rats. The rats will crawl all over you. Kind of cool. Guess not many people in this thread agree with me
