Hello Oslaue

Which countries did the British promise to give back, when taking them over? I though they just took over, and that was that, as far as they were concerned.

Don't judge the British on their colonial past! and the empire wasn't all that bad. I mean there were terrible things about it, but undoubtedly some good came of it.

Hello Mattcarr

Maybe the British Empire was not that bad, for the British.

It was mostly bad. But some good came out of it for the other peoples. I dare say a fair few african nations had a better standard of living in the empire days than now. Can't put a price on freedom though.

It's so easy to just blame the British for so many things, but all countries have done some terrible things in their past.

mel, you obviously do not follow the news...the british are still in afghan! when they promised that they would leave after a certain period of time! and im watching yup....its cnn.....and yup there still in iraq too!

these are obviously the most recent of our times.

and for most people here

the British empire / colonial past were probably the brutalist times ever!

they just didnt just take over countrys! they killed millions of innocent children and adults! far worse than what is happening in todays world.

a leapords skin never changes its spots

why else do they not allow germany to have nukes? uncase they get it in there heads again that they want to take over the world again.

germany still has and i am still wondering why they have one of the biggest militarys in europe? and everyone still is forced to serve the millitary at 18 years of age...hmmm

Steady on... what are you implying re Germany?

Some of the things that happened in the British Empire weren't pretty, but that's true of warmongering and nation/empire building anywhere - I'm not sure it's useful to compare the actions of different regimes in that way. It's also seldom the working people of a country that make decisions about who to bomb and when.

I'm a big believer in leopards changing their spots. Germany and Japan are two prime examples of this - Japan hasn't threatened any other country with military action since WWII, and the Japanese aid budget is massive.

I think that a change of government in the US would see the spots change pretty quickly - it's clear that the 9/11 effect has worn off and the American public have lost their hunger for military engagement in the Middle East.

Hello Mattcarr

I suppose the British improved the standard of living, in some African countries, by doing things like building a good road here and there, so they could move slaves and whatever more easily, out of the coutry. And did they pay for these roads, with money, from England? I think they payed for them, with the slave trade, and the diamonds and did they also take gold, from Africa? I am no history expert. I will ask my boyfriend, who knows all about who did what and when.

And u are right, one cant put a price on freedom. Difficult to price on anything, anymore.
Also, i am beginning to think, that money is a strange concept. One does not simply work, get some, and do something with it. It is so much more complicated. Conditions like politics, human rights, conflicts, environmental circumstances etc seem to determine so much. Hope that makes some since, as i am finding it difficult to put into words.

u are right oslaue.
I dont keep up to date, with the news.

But i do agreed with Magykal, overall.
There really is no point in deciding on which attrocity is marginally worse than which.
I think when people do evil, they really do not know better.
Of course people can change. We live and learn. We do our best, with the information we have at any time. As we become more enlightened and experienced, our behaviour changes.

And Oslaue, i dont know why Germany has a big army. They dont seem to want to aggress against other countries, anymore. They do however, send peace keeping troops, to some countries.

The Romans invaded here a long time ago and we don't moan about them anymore, just admire the good roads they built and the spa's they left behind. I hope in 2000 years people have a similar attitude towards the Brits - ie, they were a murderous, raping lot, but by jove they could make a good road and a nice cup of tea
