i plan on going to austin around the end of feb. and i would like to make some contacts. from what i've read the hostels there suck- anyone have advise? any help would be appreciated!

Austin hasn't exactly been a tourism center until recently, so don't expect much. I would maybe check with the Austin YMCA http://www.austinymca.org/ymcafront.asp?ID=2. I don't know that they would be able to provide lodging for you, but they might be able to direct you.

The Methodist church is really big in the central tier states. I've stayed in a number of churches throughout Kansas, TX, and a few other places. You could always check with a church in an area in Austin.

If that fails, my usual method anymore is Priceline. Just plug in a ridiculously low price and see what happens. If you do it right, you might be surprised. I've gotten extremely cheap rooms in Denver on a regular basis doing that.
