I know hotel Pensylvania in Manhattan is one of the best deals considering price-quality. Of course of maybe 20 dollar less you stay in cramped hostels and for 30 dollars more you have a little more quality...but hey, it's NY!

Hotel QT is on West 45th Street - right off Times Square! Great location.. close to subways that go everywhere. Walking distance to Rockefeller Center, Macy's and Theater District. Fantastic location for a tourist. I think the prices are low. I've never stayed there.. just noticed it on my way to work before and it looks pretty funky.

Nothing is cheap in New York, some things like a day pass on the subway can be alright value if you use it to its fullest, but other than that you are paying top dollar for everything. Big Apple hostel is in a great location, but is very expensive by dorm room standards. Times Square Hostel is also in a top location (only 1 block from Times Square, but is also on the more expensive side of the hostels. Most places in Manhattan are only a short subway ride from the main attractions if they aren't in top location like Big Apple hostel is. One hostel you should definitely avoid unless you are left with sleep on the streets on stay there, is Wanderers Inn West. The staff there are very rude, the location isn't that great being at 113th street and Times Square is around 42nd street. The couple of receptionists that I had to speak to, didn't even speak much english, almost like they are illegal immigrants from Colombia or somewhere else in South America because they weren't Mexicans.

Go to www.hostelworld.com There you will be able to see a lot of the options which by New York standards are cheap. If nothing there is good enough, I guess you are left with the options of sleeping on the streets or using a site like the hospitalityclub to find someone to host you.
