The best diving from Peninsular Malaysia would be off the East Coast. Pulau Redang and the neighbouring islands are the best. Tioman is also OK, and probably cheaper.

Places of natural beauty......... well, there's Taman Negara, the National Park. The east coast is nice as its undeveloped and quite rural.

Graham,

Among the famous islands in Malaysia (peninsular side) are Langkawi, Penang, Pangkor islands on the west coast, and Tioman, Redang, and Perhentian islands on the east coast.

The beaches and seawater on the east coast are much much cleaner than on the west. So I would suggest you to head to the east coast. But you are advised not to go during the north-easterly monsoon season (October to March), especially during the peak raining season from November until January.

Tioman is the most developed among the three beautiful islands in the east coast. It has an airport for small planes too. There are also boats (ships?) to this island from Singapore.

Redang and Perhentian islands is less developed. Many people said Redang is not as clean as it used to be 15 years ago because more and more development is taking place there. Perhentian islands, according to many, is the least developed and cleanest among the three. In fact, I was there with my friends last month. If you really want to get there, let me know, I'll try my best to help.

Chalets rates are from as low as 20 ringgit per night (basically a room with shared toilets and baths) to as high as a few hundred ringgit (resort). (Note: 1 US dollar = 3.80 Malaysian ringgit)

You may also want to take a flight to the east coast. We have a no-frills budget airline here too. Logon to http://www.airasia.com/ for more info. Ticket prices starts from a very low rate, and will increase as the seats are taken up. But don't worry, even the highest rate is still cheaper than other airlines.

More info about places of interests in Malaysia can be found in the following websites:

Hope that helps.

if u r on tight budget, i'ld suggest u pulau perhentian. diving will be fun there at reasonable price..... barebone huts start at 10 ringgit (abt 2.75usd), shower outside. pualu reddang is little expensive, both for diving and accomodation. if u can, take a cheap flight to sandakan by air asia.... sandakan is great for diving i heard (never been there though).

enjoy your time in malaysia!
