Hi all again
We've got 16 days in Southeast China and already have an itinerary which includes:
- but even including the long travel times and doing everything we want to in these areas we still have about 5 days free - does anyone have any suggestion for interesting things to do not too far away (i.e. not more than about a day's travel) from these cities?
Canton (aka Guangzhou) is possibly the nicest of the three big cities. Not as touristy and administartively self-obsessed as Beijing, or so competitive as Shanghai.
I'd spend 3 days there, one day in Beihai and one in Nanning (both in Guangxi, Beihai is the biggest sea beach in China, and Nanning the capital).
Of course, Hainan island is also great, and Yunnan is fascinating, but they are further afield.
Are you going to Hanoi afterwards? It would be a shame not to.
If you are going to Guilin and Yangshuo anyway, it would be reasonably easy to continue through to Kunming (cool city in the SW), and from there by bus to Dali and Lijiang which are both really nice, although a bit touristy/backpackery which can be either good or bad, depending on your point of view.
Agree Guangzhou is ok for a couple of days, although i found Nanning quite wierd [part of it looks strangely like Newport in Gwent, which is very bizarre] and there's not allot to see there. Having said that, there are a chunk more trains from there to Kunming, and lots of buses to Yangshuop, so you will at least pass through it if you head to Kunming/Dali. You could easily spend 5 days on Hainan Island as well.
