I've been planning to go to China to work but haven't found any job proposals yet. My plan is to work as an English teacher for at least a year. Since I'm getting frustrated due to the lack of replies, I was thinking of going backpacking and eventually find a job there.
What do you guys think? Is it risky? does anyone jave any contacts there I could use?
Northern China is very cold in the winter, Beijing, Dalian, etc you might want to keep that in mind. Its a very safe place, of course you have to use common sense as anywhere - lots of hostels and cheap places to stay and you will be approached by people asking you if you want a job teaching English, you will need a recognized course ESL or TEFL in order to teach in a school or a degree, the Chinese have high standards for their teachers -
There are a lot of rip-off situation that people have found themselves in though, not being paid etc, so you have to be careful when looking for work there. I have talked to a lot of very unhappy people who had jobs BEFORE going there and then werent paid enough to live on because they didnt get what they were promised.
Transportation is cheap, good train system. You will need to speak some Mandarin if you are traveling on your own but its quite easy to learn.
Kindred, thanks for the advice. I'll take that into account when getting there. Don't know when, it all depends on the employers.
I have been contact numerous times by a member of this site who is currently teaching in China. I showed some interest in teaching English and so he messaged me to give me details.
Please send me a personal message and I'll give you his forum name so you can contact him.
Here's a thought for you - try the local expat websites for info. You'll find people on them who are living & working there who will have loads of advice for you. Here are two sites - I'm sure if you google "china expat" you'll come up more:
