Hi guys, me and my friend ger to darwin at the beginning of Feb NEXT year and are going to rent a campervan for roughly 6 weeks to take us down to Brisbane (and get to see Alice Springs, Cairns and whatever else on route)
We were just wondering has anyone done this before or know roughly what it is like (through friends or family)??
Any advice would be fantastic like:

-How much does it cost?
-Are showers included?
Is it a good way to see places?
-is it comfortable?
-Can you cook food?
-Is it easy to navigate through OZ?
-is it cost effective?

thank you in advance for any help whatsoever
Jonny and Nicky x

G'day from the Gold Coast in Oz..you will love it all!!!!!..now about your questions:
1. Suggest you get in touch Hertz or Avis re campervans (that will give you a ball park figure to work with other camper hire sites)..those companies are some of the top end of the range of campervans.
2. You wont get a shower in a campervan..but you can always shower in a caravan park (if you stay a few days) or in the ocean or at the beach in the change areas.
3. It's the best way to see my beautiful and amazing country and you'll meet the greatest people on this earth!
4. Very comfortable
5. Yep campervans come with cooking facilities (small but very adequate) or if you pull into a caravan park for a few days there's camp ovens, kitchens, showers, shop and a bunch of fantabulous people doing what you're doin..
6. Certainly cheaper than staying in motels/hotel/guesthouses etc --..you'll be amazed at the beauty of our country, animals and especially our women!!..oops just read your signature..well our women are really beautiful but our blokes are pretty handsome too...regards Elly
ps..Plan your trip before you come so you dont miss the best of the fascinating rest!!

People in Australia only have a very small portion to judge a hot woman as no more than 20-30% are moderate-real hot looking. If you want to see hot women go to Ukraine, Latvia and Russia. In Ukraine I only saw 1 woman aged under 30 who was slightly obese and not that hot, every other woman aged under 30 was hooottt! After the age of about 30 almost all women in those countries seem to take the ugly pills and go on a food eating spree to put on an extra 80kg. They also know how to dress to impress in Summer when the weather is good.

Campervan is a brillent way to see oz, that is one of my fave trips i've done and i loved it so much i did it twice, excellent way to get around and the freedom of it is just wonderful. Have fun and enjoy it.

i bought my own campervan and drove all around oz in 2005. it was amazing definatly the best way to get around, you come across and see things that people on bus trips didnt even know existed.

Petrol is cheap

You got 100% freedom, so if you like a place, stay there for however long you want, if not ...you can move on.

My van was really comfy iv never slept so well in my life haha

campsites are located eveeerrrywhere in oz...they are great.....cheap,clean,outdoor kitchens and huge BBQ area so u can cook when u want. TV rooms things like that etc.

what we used to do sometimes when we were low on money is park outside a campsite, walk onto it and have a shower and cook something trhen head on to our next destination.

Could get into trouble if you get caught mind. but yeah go for it

nicip - can i ask how much it cost you to buy your own campervan and also did you manage to sell it on at the end of your trip?

sure we bought our van for 3200 australian dollars

and sold it for 2800

because we needed to sell it quick as we had a flight booked for new zealand

was easy peasy to sell....just printed out posters and stck them on notice boards in all the hostels around sydney

got loads of interest

not bothered about the loss because it was worth every penny.

A lot of backpackers use the kings cross car market to buy/sell vans but we did it all ourselves privatly

Cheers nicip - sounds good. Still cheaper than renting one by the sounds of things. Was insurance a problem?

Insurance wasnt a problem. Over there you need what is called a ''green slip''. u go to an office and give them ure details, registration of the vehicle, show em ure drivers liscence and pay for the green slip and thats your insurance.

really cant remember how much the green slip cost. wasnt a huge amount otherwise im sure id remember.

And when you get to OZ its not hard to look for buying a van....there are thousands of them advertised all over hostel noticeboards.

shows a pic of the van and a brief description and a contact number, meet up with the backpackers selling, check the van and if you like what you see ,bobs your uncle. Obviously the main thing is that it is mechanically sound. Should have a ''pink slip'' In oz every vehicle has to have a pink slip to show its sound. so when u buy a van make sure you inherit this slip.

we bought ours from frnech hippies the van was spray painted in flowers!!
