San Diego is great for any kind of beach action. Bike rides, surfing, parasailing, good food, and excellent weather.

Palm Springs is more for older folks, in fact I've only stayed one night there. There are alot of golf courses and thats about it from what I saw.

LasVegas is the casino capital. 21+ is where its at for Vegas, theres alot of sex, drinking, and gambling that goes on in Vegas.

Grand Canyon - Awesome to check out

Flagstaff - I'm about 2 hours away from Flagstaff... Theres good mountain recreation there, good lakes, but there isn't much else if your not into outdoors stuff.

Hope that helps a little bit, I've never been to Santa Monica (only drove through it) so I can't help ya to much there.

For day 2 I would drive north to Malibu.
I personally do not like Las Vegas( too fake and cheesy)
I would drive from LA north to Monterey instead of Las Vegas.

If you're going to be San Diego I'd also spend a night in
Tijuana.

Death Valley as a side trip would be interesting, as is the
natural theme park in Palm Desert.

San Diego is where its at, cheap food at alota places. World Famous at Pacific Beach has great lobster tacos wednesdays for $1.50, other specials most nights, On The Border has great beef tacos for $1.00 in the bar on Tuesdays. There is a navy carrier museum downtown, tacky Kansas City BBQ (Topgun)couple blocks from water and Seaworld is also good. Great bars, and fun along the bay too. Don't know about Palm Springs--I'd dodge that one. Santa Monica is cool too. Side trip to Tijuana is worth it, Don't think I would stay in T.J..gotta watch yourself a bit there. Rosarito (30mins south of TJ) is good and cheap. You can get Lobster for $20 with a drink, hotel for about the same. Its fun, plenty of partying too. Drive to Vegas from San Diego is about 8hrs...Vegas is cool, but after being there 8 times its losing its wow factor. The first time will blow you away. Also cheap to stay if you shop..looking for nite clubs check out Dreis.
Grand Canyon is awesome, and worth the look. You can do all kinds of stuff there, but Flagstaff and surrounds are--well along the way. Skip Death Valley, personally its a long trip that is great for the first 15 min..but after a couple hours you know why its called death valley.
Good luck

Scott,
I see one poster said; pass on Vegas. Of course I am going to vote that you do include Las Vegas on your road trip. Not for everybody, but certainly different. The best section of Route 66 is in Arizona, between Seligman & Bullhead City. Try to hit this section on your way back to Santa Monica.

PM me if you want advice on Vegas.

I just went to LA last Novemeber and LOVED IT! Santa Monica is absolutely beautiful and everyone down there is VERY friendly! When I went to LA I went to see the game show "The Price Is Right" and it was so much fun! Bob Barker is retiring in June so there are only a few more months to be a part of 35 year television history. It DOES however take up some time as you will have to be at the studio at around 5-5.30am and you finish around 2pm but its completely FREE and loads of fun (AND you have the chance of being a contestant!! LOL). I would definately say it is worth doing (at least one time) as seeing a TV show being made is so different from what we see it as at home. In Las Vegas (YES WORTH THE TRIP!!!) there is SO much to do. I DO like to gamble so I had loads of fun in the casinos and there are SO many with SO many different themes to go and check out. I stayed at Luxor (the pyramid) and it was on the nicer side, although there are some nicer and MANY that are less nice. (There is accomodations for every budget in LV!). Also, if you don't gamble a lot but like to drink, you can sit at a penny or nickel slot all night and play one at a time and rack up on the free drinks (you get free alcohol whilst playing in U.S. casinos, in case you didn't know that! LOL). Also, there are loads of shows in LV to see as well (YES, Celine Dion IS worth the ridiculous ticket prices! Although most shows with big name headliners in Vegas are pretty costly). Have fun on your trip! Message me if you want any more tips! :)
