Travel Forums Central/South America & The Caribbean 3 months in SA starting in Puno, PE

Hello All. I am new to TP, but have browsed the forums a fair amount and thought I would post my own question.

I am currently living in Puno, Peru and will being doing volunteer work here until the beginning of May. I will then pack up and travel for 3-ish months. (I would like to go for so much longer, but I've promised some people I'd go back to school in the fall) There are so many places I want to go, so I need some help with timing/what is realistic. I would like to do Peru, tiny bit of Bolivia, Chile (Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego), Argentina, and Brazil (some Amazon).

Here is my rough draft itinerary (all by bus):

Puno, Peru
Salt Flats, Bolivia
Down the Atacama through Chile
Valparaiso, Chile
Santiago, Chile
Pucon, Chile
Punta Arenas, Chile
Ushuaia, Argentina
Somewhere between Ushuia and B.A. (48 hrs is a long bus ride)
Buenos Aires, Argentina
Iguazu Falls Argentina/Brazil
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
?Jao Passoa, Brazil?

I have friends who have a farmhouse in Jao Passoa, Brasil who I would love to visit. The only problem is that its a looooong way from anywhere to Jao Passoa.

Will I have enough time to make it to Jao Passoa cheaply?
What kind of red tape/costs are there for Americans getting Brazilian visas now that Brazil has mirrored US immigration standards?
Any other suggestions?

Thank you for your time!

I don't know how long you can make it inside a bus. Roughly, you should stop at Peninsula Valdes, at least to break the trip in two.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
?Jao Passoa, Brazil?

You can go by bus, and the same question applies. For example, you can stop at Salvador or somewhere in Bahia (25 hs) and then to João Pessoa (16 hours). The cost is around usd150.
If time becomes a big problem and you decide to cover a long piece of land by plane, I can search a few prices for you, or access traveldm.com and ask for a budget.
Good luck!

SA winter is not the best time for visiting the Peninsula Valdez. I'd recommend travelling from Ushuaia to Rio Gallegos, then to El Calafate (Glacier, and a nice natural park) or Esquel (petrified forest and a nice natural park). It's a bit of a detour, but it may be nicer.

It may be too obvious to mention, but pack warm clothes! Tierra del Fuego and Patagonia are rather (very) cold in winter :)

Thanks for the advice. I think the hugeness of Brasil may end up affecting my plans a bit, but we'll see. I have a few more months to plan.

I certainly will be dressing warm. It can get chilly here at night in the Altiplano, and I'm only in Peru and its summer!

Hi,that's funny,we have almost the same name.
loooooooooong time ago I was living in Puno together with the people from the "servicio voluntario aleman",they where teaching at the Don Bosco school.Very few tourists at this time(1970)I was the first women playing tennis at the club.Does the restaurant Lago still exist and the cinemas opposide?Anyway,I know how cold it get there after sunset,so Patagonia would not be so much different from the Altiplano.
from Puno you can go to Tacna the border to Chile,La Serena,Antofagasta,Santiago.Valparaiso and Vina del Mar.
Argentina is this time of the year also not really warm, I was freezing also at Iguazu,Mendoza,Salta and Buenos Aires.
enjoy your time,
Marlis
