I am going to Cardiff with a connection in Schiphol. I am thinking about stay one night in Amsterdam and visit the city and take my flight to Cardiff the next day.
My only worry is,... How to go from Schiphol to Amsterdam centre? Is taking a taxi a good idea? What is the average price of a ride from Schiphol to the centre of Amsterdam?
I will be carrying a big bag so I am not very keen about public transport.
I don't plan to go disco or going out at night - only to eat - but I am concerned about my safety. Is Amsterdam a safe city for a lonely girl?
dont consider getting a taxi! - schiphol airport is quite far out from the city if you want to pay by taxi! it will cost you 40 euro!
for sure get the train! when you come out of the main arrivals hall, go up to the tickets desk and ask that you want a return journey to amsterdam centre...it will only cost a couple of euro!
under the airport there are trains that leave every 15 min (i think its platform 1 or 2), they bring you to amsterdam central station within 20min! very fast and reliable!
when you come out of amsterdam centre there are taxis waiting for you were you can be brought to your hotel / hostel...
make sure that your hotel / hostel is in the city centre otherwise you could be spending an additional 20 something euro on a taxi!
amsterdam is very safe! there is a lot of tourists about!
the red light district can be dodgy but just dont be flashing the 50 euro notes about! and you will be fine!
in the red light district you will have strangers coming up to you trying to sell you cocaine and other drugs (just smile and ignore them) do not stop and say no thanks or listen to what they have to say because other drug dealers up the road see that you are talking to drug dealers and from there prospective they think your looking for drugs and that you are trying to haggle.
95% of the time it will be black men / dark skinned trying to sell you drugs...they will slightly hassle...but just ignore...
very safe for a girl on her own!
and despite all the drug dealers about i have felt much safer walking around the red light district at 3am than in dublin / london at 3am...maybe because there is always tourists about!

There is a train from Schipol airport directly to the central train station, right at the heart of Amsterdam. It takes about 30 min and is very cheap compared to what a Taxi would cost. The price for a ride with Taxi would be something in the neighborhood of 30 EUR or more, while train is less than 10 EUR I think.
the train journey isnt even 10 euro! it costs 3.60 to be exact! for a single journey!
Thank you, Oslaue for the tips. I don't have any intention of going to the Red Light District but I might end up going as I plan walking around and Amsterdam is a small city. Is it that bad too during the day light?
The hotel I plan to stay in Amsterdam:
NES 05-23, 1012 KC AMSTERDAM
Does anyone know it? Is it in a good neighbourhood?
it says that its near dam square! so that to me is quite central! if you are that central then everything is within walking distance ...you dont even need taxis! and you are very very close to central station too!
you are close to were all the shops are!
having said that i once booked myself into a hotel were it said it was 10 min walk from the centre when infact it was 30min walk! but they have a good tram system there too!

?? Bad? She said that at 3.00 it's "very safe" even for "a girl out on her own"? How much better can it be?
Amsterdam is in my memory a beautiful city, with lovely canals and crazy bicyclists. I greatly enjoyed hearing the carillon near the Anne Frank House as its chimes played the haunting melody of "Merck toch hoe sterck" (thank you, Wikipedia) -- used for years as the interval signal for Radio Nederland International, their powerful shortwave broadcast service.
I vaguely recall being approached by one person as we left the train station asking if we wanted to buy something, but I would take that over door-to-door solicitors any day.
during the day amsterdam is fine...at night it is fine too...but you have to be a bit more street wise at night like in any city.
amsterdam is very small...only 700,000 live there!
i think its one of the safest citys that i have been to...walking around completely drunk!, ive been to amsterdam many times and i have never had any trouble nor seen it...i was expecting to be trouble but the drug dealers just try and sell...drug dealers in dublin beat you up, mug you and kill you!
the red light district is a must see! something new and different! you cant go to amsterdam and not see it!
no one would believe you if you said you didnt go there! theres also some nice pubs there too!
the dealers are not out during the day but there is nothing to see down in the red light district during the day either...
anyway they are the minority to the amount of tourists there.
and pfeiffer is right in what he says! lots to see and do...especially for one day and night!

Thank you for the tips! I find everything very useful in the travel forums. About my visit to Amsterdam; I am more a day person than a night person. I don't drink any alcoohol and I really don't like clubbing - I did a couple of times in Canada, now that I know how it is like I don't bother anymore - I am more interested in sightseeing, taking pictures and visiting museums, as taking pictures is out of question during the night - specially in the Red Light District - I don't bother. I would consider going out at night if I was with my boyfriend or any friend but by myself is not really my cup of tea.
To be honest with you my really concern is about travel from Schiphol to the hotel with my massive bag - and only bag I have and I will use this one because I will go to UK for five weeks - and being robbed or stealing as I will be an easy victim and my bag will advertise me as a tourist, and as anyone know tourists have cash, credit cards and cameras,...
I also would like to hear any suggestion about places to eat and places to avoid.
