Hi everyone, off to Rome with my boyfriend on Friday. Anyone recommend some excellent restaurants and bars in Rome?

Also what is peoples experience with the Vatican on a Saturday? How best to avoid the crowds?

Cheers everyone

Rach

The vatican has new opening hours and some new rules in favour of groups, so check their website before leaving.www.vatican.va

And they also raised the prices.

Get in line VERY early to see the museums. I'm talking at least 2 hours ahead of time. Once they've reached capacity, they shut the doors and that's that. Also, the first time round I skipped St. Peter's and the dome because there were thousands of people in line. However, on the way back a week and a half later, we showed up at 5 p.m. (it closes at 6) and found no line and very few people waiting to go up the dome. Perfect! An hour was just enough time to see everything at a decent pace.

The dome is not thát worthwhile. If it's still possible, try climbing the monument for Victor Emmanuel II instead; it's on Piazza Venezia.

The only thing I would recommend you and bf NOT to do is to sit down at any bar. The good ol' Italians had this crazy policy of charging you more to sit down, anywhere, even in the outskirts!

The area around the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain are the "hip" areas of the city, which is without question one of the best cities in Europe. A perfect mixture of the really ancient and 21st C metropolis living! Enjoy!
