I have reached London. Finally :)

Surprisingly the custom at the airport was very smooth, the officer didn't ask for any documents or x-ray. Just showed her my visa and she straight away gave me the stamp in my passport.

Thanks for everyone who helped through the process so far. It has been really helpful :):)

3. Handphone & laptop can buy in UK? Will it be cheaper in Malaysia?
I was checking out the prices of laptops here as mine decided not to work just after Christmas. The average price of laptops I was looking at (basic laptops for the purpose of surfing the Internet and doing documents) was around 350 pounds.

4. Hair Shampoo, body shampoo, toohpaste, contact lens solution, nail colour... should buy in UK?
Depending on preferences, things like shampoo, body wash, toothpaste can be relatively cheap. For example, shampoo and toothpaste can be purchased from the 1 pound shop. Contact lens solution is about 30 pounds for a 3 month supply - I use OxySept. There are house brands, e.g. Boots, which is about half the price? I had a problem with facial cleanser when I came so may want to check out whether they sell a particular brand of toiletry that you use. I had to get a friend to cart a bottle over for me.

Bring durable shoes cos the weather here is rather sad. Bring an umbrella.

6. Personal Document - all my original cert. already cost 3kg :( how many photocopy should i make?
I made about 3 sets when I came. Please remember to bring passport size photographs as well.

7. Yogurt maker - how much yogurt powder selling in UK? the Easiyo brand? I tend to bring the yogurt maker there so
that I have eat yogurt and save money.

8. Should bring blanket @ bedsheet @ towel?
Wanted to bring bedsheets but I don't think my luggage could have handled it. They can be bought at relatively okay prices though I don't know about the quality. I bought my towel from M & S for about 5 pounds - not the best quality though.

Hi,

Can anyone give an opinion on opening a UK account?

As I have check with Malaysia HSBC, we can open new account of UK with USD200 as a processing fee.

Any idea? or it is better to open a new UK account when we arrive in UK?

Another question:

My visa valid date is 7th Jan 2009 so the expire 7th Jan 2011 (written on the sticker).

But I will leave on end March so my visa date should start count follow on the sticker or follow the 1st day I landed in London?

Anyone can recommend any Logistics and Supply Chain job in London?

Any good price of place to stay in London?

Please share your experience with me as Kate, CP Spring & I will be going to London by end Feb - end March.

Hi Venessalin,

Can anyone give an opinion on opening a UK account?

You have another option more easy way to open HSBC account,
First thing you need is

PROVE OF UK PERMANENT UK ADDRESS.
i)Ask your friend in UK give his house electricity bill account number(Npower=Tenaga National).
ii)You sign up a user name in...www.npower.com... change the bill on your name(Temporary)..
iii)call up the npower customer service and request send a copy of updated bill on your name to that UK address.
iV)Within a week will recieve that bill on your name and take with your passport go to bank and open

  • HSBC Saving & Current Account.(Rememeber dont open HSBC Passport Account need pay £8 fee per month).

[Immeadiatly, you will given the account numbers...after a week they will send the ATM card and pin to your UK address.]
VI) Login www.npower.com... changed the bill name to Previous Land Lord name.
That's it..easy way..how i did...

Dont worry much about the bank account...
You can find job first...give the bank acccount later.
The agency will keep the pay(very safe and system in UK).

Enjoy ur Trip...;)

Hi All,

Anyone can answer my questions?:

I will be leaving to London on 12th March...

1. Bringing 1000GBP can last for how long? staying in London Zone 2 @ Central London @ Zone 4?
If you are planning o stay in a hostel, it will def last for 2 months (incl. dorm rent, food and travelcard). If you are looking to rent a room, then it will be enough for 5 weeks. This is in the scenario that you re spending the first month jobhunting.

2. Im taking Air Asia, only 15kg bags allow... My empty laguage already cost 5kg... so where to get the light weight but
big space laguage?
Sorry no idea.

3. Handphone & laptop can buy in UK? Will it be cheaper in Malaysia?
Better to buy handphone in your hometown, as you can just buy a T-Mobile sim here and pay as you go. My friend got a secondhand laptop for 100 pounds, as she just wanted internet browsing. If you want to buy a new one, it will obviosuly cost more, around 400 pounds

4. Hair Shampoo, body shampoo, toohpaste, contact lens solution, nail colour... should buy in UK?
Pls buy it in London! Pref in BOOTS stores, as lots of variety here and anyway you will feel terrible if you like them but don't want to buy them because you already have bought them from your country (this is what i felt... i am nowwaiting for my own things to get empty so that i can buy from BOOTS!)

5. What is teh most necessary clothes to bring - 10 set of each season (pants and shirt);
Shoes- 1 sport shoes, 1 slipper, 1 boot, 1 high heel, 1 working shoes?
Handbag - 1 working, 1 travel, 1 evening, 1 casual?
Anything related to spring/summer, you buy from Malaysia and come (they will be costly here). Anything related to winter you can buy here... whatever u buy in a tropical country has no use in British winter. I got some coats from India to wear in January, and now I am wearing them INSIDE and another, London-bought coat outside. Sigh.

6. Personal Document - all my original cert. already cost 3kg :( how many photocopy should i make?
Take 2 copies and put the documents in hand luggage. Here printouts/xerox are very costly, 10 pence per sheet.

7. Yogurt maker - how much yogurt powder selling in UK? the Easiyo brand? I tend to bring the yogurt maker there so
that I have eat yogurt and save money.
Lol, you will not save money if you eat yogurt alone, you will only be miserable! Come on - you are in UK, one of richest countries of the world, don't starve here! You worked so hard to get into UK, now you deserve good food! if you cook, you can spend as little as 10 pounds a week and still be fed like a king. You just need to grocery shop sensibly. I will post a separate post with my grocery list.

Also, lots of thai and chinese markets here... but yes, I'd advice you to get the spices from your country (and some recipe booklets, if you want), if you like to cook malaysian food at home.

Eating out is expensive in London, but can be done once in a while. Places like Sam's Chicken has a special like 6 chicken wings for 2 pounds, which is filling (for me). I generally don't eat anything else that day because I am full.

To answer your original question, I don't know about yogurt maker but in London, 1 small carton of yogurt costs 60 pence. I just got one yesterday to prepare a yogurt-based Indian side dish, and the carton became empty when I finished cooking! Need to buy another!

8. Should bring blanket @ bedsheet @ towel?
Towels and bedsheet is good. One lightweight blanket for yourself is also good, but most rooms/hostels come with heavyduty duvets and blankets...

  • I'm now busy for packing but really dun know what is the most most important things to bring... :(

Hope this helped!

hi buddy,
i applied around that time and got it approved, but i am in india.

i know you feel bad abt your refusal of visa, but if its any consolation, it's a terrible time to come to UK in 2009. the pound is at an alltime low, the groceries are getting costlier and the job market is plain dismal. Unless you are purely coming for a working holiday and don't care about saving, it is good that you are retaining your job in Malaysia. Trust me, I'm in London and I am seeing people suffer, so consider yourself spared :)
