Hi everyone,

I just got my WHM visa from the BHC in Kuala Lumpur and will be traveling to the UK in January 2008. I was thinking of residing in London during my WHM period. However, I know no one in London since most of my friends are in the West Midlands and other parts of the UK.

Does anyone know where is the best area to stay in London? I'll be living on a strict budget for the first few months til I get a full time job. I saw some cheap accomodation for let in Kensington i.e. bedsits and studio, and I was thinking of going to meet up with property agents once I arrive in the UK. What are the criteria that I should consider when looking for accomodation? Would I be able to rent a a bedsit or studio without a job and a bank account? What about the bills and the council tax?

Is there anyone who's flying to the UK in Jan on WHM visa?

Hi zero cool,

If it's for myself, the criteria that i would consider are pricing (i need to set how much is my budget), transport accessiblity/convenience to my workplace, minimun period and safety, just like renting a house/room back in Malaysia. Some bedsits tends to be very basic, just a bed, sink, stove and to share bathroom with other tenants and cost around £120-150 or more per week. Studio no doubt would be more costlier. You could fork out lesser if you could find few friends to rent a flat/house together.

You will have no problem renting without a job and bank account so long you've WHM visa. Though, there're a small minority who ask for UK bank account proof but do not be bother with it - just a small minority. For the bills and council tax, some rents quoted is inclusive and some is not so check with them when you inquire.

Just for your info, some hostels do offer some reasonable weekly rate (considering in London) for less than £300 (can't remember the exact) but the minus is you have to share with others. It's a good way of staying cheap for a while. A cheap single room or box room could cost as around £50-70 per week, a double room normally starts from £80 per week (some may not include bills and council tax yet).

Hey guys,

Here's my story...

My application for WHM has been rejected at first place by the BHC mainly due to the fact that they didn't find it credible and realistic for me to leave my current job (bcos of the fact that I've been caught for a long time in the rat race up the corporate ladder) and also due to the fact that I've been working for quite a number of years. But at the same time they couldn't agree more with the fact that I am still eligible to apply for the visa since I will only turn 31 this coming November 24th.

Secondly, they rejected my application bcos I didn't mention or explained how am I gonna spend my leisure time in the UK (yes i didn't put up any itinerary and I took it very lightly :P).

Thirdly, they rejected me because I didn't mention what kind of job I intend to do or how wil I support myself when the money that that I propose to take has run out.

With all those basis they claimed that I am not a genuine whm who intends not to leave the UK on completion of my proposed stay.

So I appealed and explained in detail my grounds of appeal against refusal of entry clearance and went for a paper hearing. Submitted my appeal on a friday and got to know that my refusal has been overturned the next Monday.

So here I am planning my trip to the UK. Am leaving on Emirates on the 10th of January becos that's the best fare that I could find i.e. RM2,169 one way to Paris. Will stopover in Dubai to visit friends for few days then fly direct to Paris. Paris is fine for me cos I have friends and my parents' friends are residing there ( I was born in Paris and stayed there for more than 10 years). BUT I know no one in the UK esp. in London. From Paris I will fly with British Airways for 65 Euro.

The only problem now is for me to find accomodation in London. I have advertised in GUMTREE and got few responses. Some are good deal some are just OK. There's this girl who lives at Oxford Street who wants to rent me a room for 300 pounds p/m which I consider the best looking at the rent and the ideal location. She e-mailed me her copy of passport and and utility bill yesterday so that I know that she's genuine. However, I still have doubts about it. She said that we can go into agreement once everything is finalized and that I can make payment ( I've asked if I canjust transfer a minimum rent for a month i.e. 300 pounds or utility deposit of 150 pounds) tru transfer via Western Union Money Exchange. Once everything is done she will make sure that I'll get a legal tenancy agreement and will send it over to me. At first she asked whether I want to make full payment of 6 months since I told her that I am planning to stay for 6 months at her flat.

Guys, what do you think? I really need advise. Or should I just see a property agent once I got off the plane in London? or should I just find a lodge or B&B upon arrival and only look for accomodation once I am there? Help help help (gosh can imagine the tot of running around looking for accomodation in COLD January! Sigh).

Quoting TunaOK

My first choice were Thai airways - around rm 2200 one way ( cheaper than Emirates and Qatar).
However i was on the waitiing list ( seats were selling fast although i booked more than 2 months ahead ) so i couldnt take the risk and bought british airways instead
Suprisingly even cheaper Thanks to Hien's advice

I am taking qantas to hong kong and british airway to london. ( transit 3 hours )
Bought my ticket at www.britishairways.com.
Paid RM 1988 one way - i booked this about 3 weeks ago so fair could be fairly more expensive now

Thanks for the details... i will be booking my tickets next month.

oh ya, no problem.

i divide my travel plan into four section. first is period of time and location, second is accomodation, third, job and the last one is attraction

for example. feb 08-may 08- newcastle, provide the list of cheap accomodation, best proof will be the one printed from internet. then have to write something into job searching. what type of job u're looking for, how long you're planning to work for this job and how long you're planning to visit the surrounding attraction. i printed some job agency list in the city , hopefully it will help me. the last one, attraction, senang lah, lotsa information from the net. oh ya, i also mention i will rent a camper van when travelling so i provide a list of rental company i am interested.

bank statement and fix deposit..sure everybody know it already.

invitation letter from uk. must indicated ur sfriend is employed and financially stable, also need to mention how do u know him/her.......so ma fan lah!!

letter from ur sponsor and his/her financial background, proof of relationship. sure everybody know it already too

since i can't give current employment detail so i will give my previous employment detail :(

my travel experience. haven't prepare this one yet and wondering what i can write inside. the only continent i never been to is south america so if i really want to write out the experience i afraid it will be a long long story.

this is the idea from mctnesh. the aspiration and inspiration. you can say u get ur inspiration from Queen Elizabeth or David Beckham but please state why why why.

i will submit my house purchase agreement too. good to proof that u will back and take care of the house. car also can lah, say malaysia proton can't abandoned too long and need you back for service. humour is very important in english culture.

and the rest...this form and that form.

to avoid the biggest disappointment i already have preparation to fail the visa

Hi zero_cool,

No matter how genuine people appeared to be, it is best to take caution especially in your situation. I would not want to pay for a place i have not seen in actual life. There are plenty of ad for room/flat rental from the website, newspaper and in some shops. Be assured you will find a place.

Oxford Street as far as i know is a stretch of shops/restaurants in London but i may be wrong. If you want i could ask my friend to check out the address of the place in Oxford Street for you.

Hey there,

Thank for the reply. I googled that woman (Rebecca Jane Dagg) and found out that there's somekind of scam/spam in GUMTREE. Another Spanish gal also received the same kind of offer but when she told her that she wanted the room to be viewed by another friend of her who's already in London. That Rebecca chicken out and didnt want to proceed. She gave me a phone no. but I tried to call many times and there was no answer. Anyway, just forget it. I'll just go to London and dump my stuff at a friend's friend and check-in at a backpackers lodge and just stay there for a week or two while finding a job and identify where I wanna stay. I think that's the best thing I can do for now. All of us should gather and share a dorm together. That will be fun!
