Good day everyone,

My friend and i will go to UK in June 2007 for working holiday. Any suggestion on where should we start off first? Is it easy to get a job, which provides free accomodation? ;)

dear Whei Shing

the only jobs i know that provides free accomodation is working in chinese restaurants and takeaways. and usually it is a bit illegal, sinc most of them dont pay taxes, but it is the best way to make money

by the way, safe to say that the weather and temperature is getting hotter. it is really hot here, but i think it is not as hot as in Malaysia. it should be spring, but it is like summer. really strange weather we seem to be getting in south wales and southern england

ya, that's true. i heard from my fren that it hit 26'C yest. which only happen on summer years back. Anyone could advise on buying travel insurance b4 going to uk? Anyone there who bought insurance by whm visa with one way air ticket?

I bought one-way ticket from Singapore to Amsterdam, transfer at London. It cost about SGD900, flying with Qantas. I am thinking of touring around the Benelux area first before settle down in London.

Regarding the insurance matter, i did some studies and found NONE of them that can cover our stay for 2 years in UK. There are 2 types of travel insurance available, namely Annual plan & Single trip.

Annual travel insurance is cheaper, but you must physically back to Malaysia within 90 days of each trip. If you stay longer than 90 days overseas, the insurance will lost it's protection towards you. This plan definitely not suitable for working holiday makers like us.

On the other hand, single trip travel insurance is more expensive, the premium can easily hits S$600 (RM1300+) a year. This type of travel insurance cover your stay in overseas up to 365 days (some only offer up to 180 days, it depends). Whether is it worth to pay RM1300++ for a 1 year insurance in UK is very subjectable. After the insurance period is over, you don't get any coverage anymore.

National Insurance (NI) in UK is not an insurance that can cover your medical expenses. Don't get con ... haha

I am personally looking for local insurance in UK but still in the stage of studying. Anyone here bought medical insurance in UK? Mind to share?

it seems that many newpapers in the UK is saying that a recession might be happening soon in the UK. this is due to the fact that house prices are getting too expensive and the demand for houses are still going through the roof. the government thinks that the people have too much money, therefore the government will be increasing the inflation fate and mortgage rate to pile on the misery. unfortunately, the increase in inflation rate hasnt dampened the cost of a house, so everybody in the financial circle predicts a recession might be looming. dont know how true this could be, but if it comes true, it would spell disaster for a lot of people.

hi,

i had submitted my aplication on this monday (16 April) & the current status at the VFS website stated :

"The passport has been received from British High Commission, please collect the same from the UK Visa Application Center where it was submitted. "

may i know what does it mean? do i get the visa or?
i tried to call to the VFS center to ask but its all answering machine & no option for me to talk to the personnel. funny.

hope someone can guide me on this

thanks.

On the bright side, you're granted a visa :) My friend's gf got her WHM visa 2 days after her application (similar to your case), without going through any interview.

The other possibility would be: your application is not successful

Why don't you go & pick up your passport now to find out ;)

All the best! Do update us the status..
