Hi John,

I also bank with Natwest but there is absolutely no way I'd use them while abroad so I opened a Nationwide account as well just for travel. There are no charges at all for use abroad - even your debit card - so it's a bit silly not to get one. Here's what you'll pay with your natwest account abroad:

Natwest Foreign Transaction Charges

And here's what you'll pay with nationwide:

Nationwide Foreign Transaction Charges

It's a small step to run through and it could even allow you to avoid opening an oz account altogether given that you won't pay any more to use the flexaccount in Oz than you would to use it here.

Worth doing, beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Cheers

Chris

Yes you are - I didn't realise he was working. I'd still get a flexaccount though.

Thanks again for the replies :)

Been looking at that citibank option, but the website (http://www.citibank.com.au) does not seem to have the option of a travellers account anymore, all the links from STA and visa sites seem to be duff. Possibly they have stopped this service?

Cheers,
John

Looks like that citibank account option is no longer available :(, as shown here:...http://www.citibank.com.au/aifs/...bit of a shame as what em done sounded pretty good.

Regards,
John

Really sorry John I wasn't aware they had stopped doing that account, or I wouldn't have babbled on about how good it was. If you have an STA Travel near you or a backpacker orientated travel agent then I would recommend asking them what is the new account they set up, as STA had that as a big plus, they may be in co-operation with another company now, it is worth asking. But I agree with some other comments about taking a safe amount of money out JUST INCASE to start you off, even if it's in travellers cheques, as our account did take a week to go through (longer than it should have) , just a warning. If you have any other travel questions, feel free to send me a message, otherwsie have a fantastic time whenever you are off!
Em xx
