how long to spend in the south island

Travel Forums Australia / New Zealand & The Pacific how long to spend in the south island

I've been in the North island for about 3 weeks now and I'm off to the South tomorrow. I had originally booked an onward flight from Christchurch to Melbourne on the 26th of January but I've been spending more time in the North than I expected and I feel like I'll probably want to do the same in the South. I can easily extend the flight until Feb 15 or so but I'm wondering if I really need that much time. I'm doing a Stray bus tour on the South which goes all over. Any suggestions on time frame would be appreciated, thanks.

Hi rozner

When I was in NZ last year I spent twice as long on the South Island than the North.

I'd give yourself a few weeks if you can. That way you won't need to rush and will really get a chance to experience it's full potential!

It's beautiful! You'll love it!

Give yourself as much time as possible in the South. There is heaps to see. When I was in NZ I was there for 6 months, and over 5 of it was spent on the South.

Yes, definitely bag yourself the extra time, if you liked the North island you'll love the South. Do it!
