You need a Schengen visa. This is a visa for several countries in the EU (probably for all EU countries but I am not sure). I know that there are many TPmembers that know more about the Schengen visa...

Going by your profile, it says you have UK citizenship. If that is the case, then you wouldn't need a visa travelling around Europe for almost everywhere. If you went to Russia or Belarus you do need visas and they are both very pricey and a pain in the backside to get. Pretty much everywhere else in Europe you wouldn't need a visa for assuming you hold a UK passport. If you planned on living and working in a country rather than being a tourist I think you need to register (not sure where you go about doing it). If you don't hold a passport of a EU country, then you may require visas for places other than Russia and Belarus but until people know which countries passport you hold no one will be able to tell you much and be 100% sure they are telling you the correct stuff.
